Some books we’re enjoying right now

What Library staff is reading and recommending

Here are some book recommendations from the Libary staff and volunteers. For more staff recommendations, check regularly our display near the Graphic Novels section at the front of the Library.

The Science of Fear by Daniel Gardner
(recommended by )
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how we make choices concerning health, politics, safety, finance…just about any choice, and how our psychology works to motivate us to make these choices.

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson
(recommended by Audrey Chapuis, reference and collections librarian)
Winterson has always been interested in how our lives can be redeemed through narrative, and here she trains her storyteller’s eye on her own childhood. A profound, moving, and indeed redemptive memoir.

Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials that Shape Our Man-made World by Mark Miodownik
(recommended by Abigail Altman, reference and collections librarian)
You don’t need a background in science to enjoy this engaging book about the everyday materials we encounter in our daily lives.

Almost Famous Women: Stories by Megan Mayhew Bergman
(recommended by Pauline Lemasson, external relations manager)
Bergman gives thirteen women – some recognizable and others are known by their famous surnames – another chance to have their life stories told in this very entertaining collection of short stories.
