Since 2018, The American Library in Paris has welcomed distinguished authors to the heart of Paris through its Writer-in-Residence program. Created to foster cultural and artistic exchange, the program brings celebrated voices into direct conversation with our community of readers, writers, and thinkers.

Each residency is a short-term stay in which a selected writer lives and works in Paris while engaging with the Library and its members. It is an opportunity for the writer to immerse themselves in the city’s literary life, and for our community to meet, hear from, and learn from an author up close.

During their time with us, the Writer-in-Residence will:

• Be in Paris for the full length of the residency
• Present an hour-long evening program at the Library on a topic chosen together with our team
• Join a Library reception, giving members and guests the chance to meet the writer in person
• Acknowledge the Library and the Writer-in-Residence program in publications and print media connected to the residency

Howard A. Rodman is the author of the novels Destiny Express and The Great Eastern. As a screenwriter, his films include Joe Gould’s Secret; August with Josh Hartnett, Rip Torn, and David Bowie; and Savage Grace with Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne. On television, he’s written for Fallen Angels and staffed on HBO Max’s The Idol. He’s a vice president of the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a member of the Screenwriters Hall of Fame, and was knighted by the Republic of France as an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He lives in Los Angeles.

A seminar on the craft, business, and possibilities of writing for film and television, from the creative process to the relationship between writing and directing.
