The American Library in Paris is pleased to share our selection of cultural events going on in the city each month. Spring has arrived in Paris! Go out and visit these two beautiful exhibits exploring the wonders of nature. This is a great time to visit the Musée de la Vie Romantique, one of Paris’ hidden gems, and be sure to have tea at the delightful café in the museum garden, which only opens when the weather warms up. There’s also a great family festival at the Parc de la Villette. As always, we’ve selected some books from our collection to go along with your cultural visits. Happy visiting and reading!

WHAT: THE POWER OF FLOWERS, PIERRE-JOSEPH REDOUTE (1759-1840) (exhibition)

The botanical painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté, nicknamed the “Raphael of flowers,” was so successful in his precise and beautiful watercolors of lilies and roses that his works were imitated all over the world. His images flourished in books, art objects, wallpaper, and fashion accessories. The Musée de la Vie Romantique, in a special partnership with the Musée Nationale de l’Histoire Naturelle, offers an exhibition of some of his rarest watercolors, revealing the subtle skill of an amazing painter and botanist.

WHAT: JARDINS (exhibition)
WHERE: GRAND PALAIS

The representation of gardens in art and the passion for garden held by many artists is the theme behind the Jardins exhibition at the Grand Palais, which brings together painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, and films. Expect pieces by masters like Klimt, Picasso, Matisse, Monet, and Cézanne, as well as contemporary artists like Wolfgang Tillmans and Gerhard Richter. The focus is on the history of gardens at their most beautiful, rather than the environmental impact of gardens and their future.

WHAT: AFRIQUE CAPITALES (festival)
WHERE: LA VILLETTE
WHEN: 29 MARCH 2017 – 28 MAY 2017
La Villette presents a multidisciplinary festival devoted 100% to Africa and African arts and provides a unique opportunity to discover the contemporary African art scene through paintings, photos, installations, videos, sculptures, and sound creations. The festival “Afrique Capitales” brings together ten productions specifically made for the exhibition. Over sixty artists from all generations will be represented including Pascale Marthine Tayou, William Kentridge, James Webb, Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, and many other artists, many of whom will be exhibiting in France for the first time.
