Looking for a scary read for Halloween (or anytime)? Here are some of our spookiest tales in our collection for adults, teens, and children.
The Shining by Stephen King
Stephen King is the king of horror so we have to have him at the top of our list! While we choose The Shining, King’s tale of Jack Torrance’s descent into madness and violence and his son who possesses “the shining,” any of King’s 54 published books sure to give you the chills!
Collected Stories by Roald Dahl
Think Roald Dahl only writes fun stories about talking animals and chocolate factories? Think again! His macabre short stories, usually ending with a grim twist are definitely not for younger readers! Special creepy mentions go out to The Landlady and Lamb to the Slaughter.
Dreamfall by Amy Plum
This eerie and disorienting book finds 7 teenagers trapped in their own worst nightmares after an experiment to cure their insomnia goes terribly wrong. Stuck in linked comas they have to fight their nightmares if they want to survive! Might not be the best before-bed read!
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Winner of both the Carnegie and Newberry Medals, Gaiman’s tale of Nobody “Bod” Owens, raised by ghosts in a graveyard will leave you gripped and a little haunted. Gaiman’s mix of murder, mystery, and humor, narrating Bod’s life with his supernatural friends and family, while he searches for why his family was brutally murdered and gains supernatural abilities, is not to be missed.
A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz
Faithful to the original gruesome fairy tales this creepy and bloody story of Hansel and Gretel’s adventures might not be a before-bed read for young readers but Gidwitz’s master storytelling will have you transfixed as if under a spell.
Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe
Beware the Hare! The Vampire Hare! Love fluffy bunnies? Then this story might not be for you but the tale of Harold the dog and Chester the cat, searching for the truth about a suspicious-looking bunny with unusual habits…and fangs, is enthralling and a classic!
