 Books becoming movies

It’s been said that 2015 was a great year for movie adaptations from books. From Still Alice (by Lisa Genova) to The Mortdecai Trilogy (by Kyril Bonfiglioli) to Child 44 (by Tom Rob Smith), there was no shortage of books becoming movies. Now that summer is almost upon us, more books will be showing up in theatres soon, so be sure to check them out and read them before you see them!

1. Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

The story: Probably something you already read as part of a highschool requirement, Thomas Hardy’s classic love story about an independent woman named Bathsheba Everdeen having to make difficult choices, not the very least about the three very different men pursuing her: a shepherd, a sergeant and a wealthy bachelor.
Release date: 1 May 2015 (U.S.)

2. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

The story: A beautiful young woman impulsively marries a widowed country doctor, grows bored of him and engages in affairs in the hopes of escaping the banalities of her provincial life. Flaubert’s first book is considered his masterpiece and has been adapted to film and television since 1932.

3. Paper Towns by John Green

The story: A best-seller about a boy named Quentin who has loved his impossibly sophisticated next-door neighbor Margo forever; they both embark on an all-night road trip to settle scores. Margo disappears and her injured parents wash their hands of her. Q now needs to find out what happened to M with the clues that she seems to have left for him.

4. The Scorch Trials: The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner

The story: The second installation in the Maze Runner series (both book and movie) picks up where the first book leaves off. Thomas and the Gladers have escaped the Maze but are now thrust into the violent world of a devasted planet. There’s lots of running and overcoming challenges in order to survive, and more importantly, find a cure to the Flare virus.

5. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

The story: Many movie adaptations of Mary Shelley’s classic gothic tale of humanity focuses on Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the monster that he creates from corpses, however this film (called Victor Frankenstein) is told from the perspective of his loyal assistant Igor.

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy

6. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

The story: After three best-selling books and three films, Katniss Everdeen needs no further introduction for an entire generation. In this final film (part 2 of 2) based on the third book in the Hunger Games series, Katniss’ rebellion against the Capital and President Snow will come to a culmination.

7. The Martian by Andy Weir

The story: A science fiction story about astronaut Mark Watney who was one of the first people to land on Mars, but is believed dead by his crew. Left alone on the planet with no way to communicate back, he needs to improvise in order to survive.
