Nabokov in America
Tuesdays, 16h30–18h00 (Spaces Open)
Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) has been called one of the greatest English stylists of all time, although English was his second language. Lolita (1955) was at once the most admired and the most reviled American novel of the second half of the 20th century. Having already written nine novels in Russian before moving to the U.S. in 1940, he reinvented himself as an American writer and during the 20 years that followed produced his finest work. We will read and discuss his three major novels from that period, as well as the brilliant memoir Speak, Memory which is mainly devoted to his childhood in St. Petersburg.
