Education of Hand and Heart
with author and educator Satish Kumar

In 1962, Satish Kumar embarked on a two-and-a-half-year-long, eight-thousand mile “Pilgrimage for Peace” to spread a message of nonviolence and oppose the Cold War. Over his travels, he visited the four major capitals of nuclear armament at the time: Moscow, Paris, London, and Washington. It was this experience, as well as a deep study of Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, that inspired Kumar to co-found Schumacher College in Devon, England.
Schumacher College is a college for ecological studies, offering ecology-centered masters programs, short courses, and horticultural classes. The aims of the college are to develop and practice an education system for the age of ecology. Arguing that the current mode of education, developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age, is out-of-date, its founders offer a pedagogical approach which confronts the climate crisis by treating nature itself as a teacher. In the words of Kumar, students “learn from nature, about nature, with nature, in nature” and receive not only an education of the head, but also an “education of hand and heart.” Kumar will speak about the past, present and future of ecology-centered learning and teaching. In conversation with Programs Manager Alice McCrum, he will also reflect upon the ethos of participation and responsibility, as well as expand upon the fight for climate justice.
