You’ll try to identify the ingredients\, and vote on your favorite cookies. All participants must be able to understand and speak English in order to participate in the program. Caregivers and parents of young children are encouraged to participate in this event with their children. Ranging from ancient empires to contemporary tech giants\, and the return of Chinese power\, the book traces how this political model was forged and how it may be coming apart. Together\, they’ll explore what comes next when political systems no longer provide security\, stability\, or a sense of belonging. \nAbout the speakers: \nRana Dasgupta is the author of two novels and a non-fiction portrait of twenty-first century Delhi. Dasgupta was a visiting fellow in the humanities at Princeton University and has taught as a visiting lecturer at Brown University. His essays have been published in the Guardian\, New Statesman\, and BBC.com\, and his writing has won the Windham Campbell Prize\, the Commonwealth Prize\, and the Ryszard Kapuściński Award. He lives in Delhi. \nMartin Gelin is a Swedish-American journalist and the author of seven books on American politics\, foreign affairs and culture. His latest book\, Rules of Attraction: Why Soft Power Matters in Hard Times\, will be published in English in 2026. He has written for the Guardian\, Foreign Policy\, Washington Post\, and New York Magazine. Stories featured in this event include picture books such as Let the Children March by Monica Clark Robinson\, illustrated by Frank Morrison and When I Hear Spirituals by Chery Willis Hudson\, illustrated by London Ladd(pictured here). But actively making music—with our voices and our bodies—is important to children’s overall development. Since 1987\, Music Together\, has introduced millions of children\, parents\, and teachers to the joys of music-making and the powerful benefits of having music in their lives. In our family workshops children and parents learn together through active exploration and live\, meaningful interaction. So\, take out the earbuds and pick up the instruments we were all given at birth—ourselves! Each child (aged 0–5) should accompany one of their favorite grownups. \nAbout Stacey Pavesi Debré:  An American in Paris since 2014\, Stacey has been passionate about music and learning her whole life. She studied piano and string bass\, joined choirs\, orchestras\, a capella groups and musical theaters\, and worked as a vocalist in Japan and a singing bartender in NYC. In 2017\, Stacey founded Bébé Music Box to bring Music Together’s award-winning music and movement classes to families and schools in Paris. Our weekly mixed-age family classes are a fun\, dynamic\, and inspiring way for families to connect through music. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]During this event\, learn about the history of Paris’s architecture from the 19th century until now. Participants will receive an introduction to the Haussmannian\, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles of architecture\, then head out into the 7th arrondissement (with your grown-up) for a scavenger hunt to find examples of the styles we talked about. \nThis activity is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. All participants must be able to understand and speak English in order to participate in the program. Caregivers and parents of young children are encouraged to participate in this event with their children. Children between the ages 6–12 may participate in Library programs on their own\, while their chaperone remains inside the Library. \nThis event will be hosted by Eloi Guibert\, as part of a Social Impact Fellowship through Princeton University’s partnership with the American Library. Eloi Guibert grew up in Paris and studied philosophy and art history before starting his Ph.D. in the United States. His research revolves around 19th-century French literature and political history. Journalists Catherine Porter\, Anne-Sophie Moreau and Valentine Faure\, together with translator Natasha Lehrer\, will examine the broader questions Pelicot’s case raises about violence against women\, justice\, and public reckoning in France and beyond. Drawing on courtroom reporting\, literary translation\, philosophy\, and cultural criticism\, the panel will explore how such cases are narrated\, understood\, and remembered—and what they reveal about the status of women today. \nAbout the speakers: \nCatherine Porter is an international correspondent for the New York Times based in Paris. A foreign correspondent for the past 14 years\, Ms. Porter is an expert on Haiti\, having reported on the country since the devastating earthquake in 2010. Her book about the experience\, entitled “A Girl Named Lovely\,” was published by Simon & Schuster in 2019. She was part of a team in 2022 that won the George Polk award for their reporting on the assassination of former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse and she led The Times’ five-part investigation into the Haitian independence debt\, which won the prestigious Hillman Prize in 2023. Based in Paris since 2022\, she was one of a handful of foreign journalists who covered the Pelicot trial since the day it opened\, sure it would spark existential discussions in France. Thankfully\, she was right. \nAnne-Sophie Moreau is a French journalist and editor-in-chief at Philosophie Magazine. She is the author of Fermentations (Le Seuil\, 2025)\, a philosophical inquiry about microbes and politics. She addresses social and moral issues in her essays and articles. \nValentine Faure is a French journalist who works for the Ideas section of Le Monde. Her writing has appeared in the Nation\, the Atlantic\, and the New York Times. She is the author of Quand je me suis relevée j’ai pris mon fusil (Grasset\, 2018)\, focusing on a widely publicized case in France to examine female counter-violence—its history\, moral dimensions\, and repression. \nNatasha Lehrer’s essays and reviews have appeared in the Guardian\, Observer\, Times Literary Supplement\, the Nation\, Frieze and other journals. She has translated over two dozen books. In 2016 she won the Scott Moncrieff translation prize for Suite for Barbara Loden by Nathalie Léger. Her translation of Neige Sinno’s Sad Tiger was shortlisted for 2025 National Book Award for translated literature and for the 2025 National Book Critics Circle Greg Barrios Book in Translation prize. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Children in 1st grade (CP) though 4th grade (CM1) will be paired with a teen reading buddy and the pairs spend time reading together in a supportive environment at the American Library in Paris. Reading buddies will meet twice a month for one hour of shared reading-out-loud practice\, and fun literacy-related games. Reading Buddies aims to boost young readers’ skills and get children excited about reading and the Library. It is not a tutoring service. \nLittle Buddies must apply by completing this Little Buddy application. Space is limited. \nThe Reading Buddies program is facilitated by the Children’s and Teens’ Services staff under the supervision of the Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager. Teen volunteers (Big Buddies) receive training on how to be a reading mentor from Library staff. \nThis trial program will run for four sessions between March and April. The figure can be of a person\, an animal\, an object\, or even a made-up creature. Learn about creating a puppet in this creative workshop\, then think about creating your own character and make it into a puppet. Once characters are created\, you’ll write scenes for them to star in. \nThis activity is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. All participants must be able to understand and speak English in order to participate in the program. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Given the demands of the American university application process\, students interested in pursuing higher education in the U.S. are well advised to begin preparing early in their high school career for its demands\, perhaps even before they embark on their final two years of study toward the French bac or IB. In this presentation with guests from College Goals\, teens and their parents will explore the application and admissions process for US colleges and universities and how best to prepare. What do families need to know for their students to be successful and satisfied by the university search and application process? How can students produce a strong and interesting U.S. university application? In the first of a series of presentations on aspects of the American college application process\, College Goals’ counselor\, Andrea van Niekerk will discuss the concepts\, language\, and protocols students need to be aware of if they hope to apply to US institutions. \n  \nAbout Andrea van Niekerk: Andrea served for a decade as Associate Director of Admission\, with a focus on international applicants\, and as Freshman Academic Adviser at Brown University\, and as Residential Fellow in a dorm at Stanford. In this interactive lecture\, novelist and current American Library Visiting Fellow Rasheed Newson examines how queer Black Americans have been perceived and received in France\, and why so many have chosen expatriate life in the City of Lights. Blending history\, visual media\, and cultural analysis\, Newson interrogates Paris as a refuge—and the limits of that promise. \nAbout the speaker: \nRasheed Newson is the author of the national bestseller My Government Means to Kill Me. The novel was a Lambda Literary finalist for Gay Fiction and was named one of the “100 Notable Books of 2022” by the New York Times. His forthcoming novel\, There’s Only One Sin in Hollywood\, is slated for publication by Flatiron in 2026. Rasheed is also a television drama writer\, producer\, and showrunner. SUMMARY:Story Hour: How Many? How Much? (ages 3–5)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]For this program\, join us for stories centered on numbers! Stories featured in this event include picture books such as Count the Monkeys by Mac Barnett\, illustrated by Kevin Cornell and If You Made a Million by David M. Schwartz (pictured here). We’ll also sing songs and practice rhymes. \nThis program is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. This participatory program is intended to encourage children to actively engage with stories. Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members will read books and lead you and your little one in songs and hand-rhymes during a live\, interactive session. Plan to join in\, sing along\, move around\, and model movement and listening for your little one. We ask that all caregivers put away their phones and other electronic devices for the duration of this program. SUMMARY:Toddler Time (ages 1–3)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]This event for children ages 1–3 and their caregivers features 30 minutes of stories\, songs\, and rhymes. Stories presented during our Toddler Time programs include short picture books and board books such as How to Cheer Up a Friend by Stephanie Calmenson\, illustrated by Shannon McNeill (pictured here)\, which will be featured during this session. \nToddler Time sessions are hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members\, and include age-appropriate stories selected by the Library’s Children’s and Teens’ librarians. Enjoy stories\, music\, movement and rhymes and help develop your child’s early literacy skills. Stay for play and social time after the event. \nThe program is entirely in English\, as are all of our events for children and teens. No translation will be provided. Each child must be accompanied by an adult chaperone\, and chaperones are required to remain with their children for the duration of the program. Parents and caregivers are expected to sit with their children beside them\, or in their laps\, and participate in the program.
