SUMMARY:Saturday Series: Flowers—Print and Press (ages 6–12)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Learn about the parts of flowers and plants\, then then create your own artwork out of found blooms and blossoms. We’ll take a look at What’s Inside a Flower by Rachel Ignotofsky (pictured here) and then we’ll make flower art with plaster and pressed flowers. All supplies will be provided by the Library\, but participants are welcome to bring in flowers and leaves to contribute! \nThis event will be hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager Celeste Rhoads with the help of Library volunteers. The activity is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. All participants must be able to understand and speak English in order to participate in the program. But actively making music—with our voices and our bodies—is important to children’s overall development. Since 1987\, Music Together\, has introduced millions of children\, parents\, and teachers to the joys of music-making and the powerful benefits of having music in their lives. In our family workshops children and parents learn together through active exploration and live\, meaningful interaction. So\, take out the earbuds and pick up the instruments we were all given at birth—ourselves! Each child (aged 0–5) should accompany one of their favorite grownups. \nAbout Stacey Pavesi Debré:  An American in Paris since 2014\, Stacey has been passionate about music and learning her whole life. She studied piano and string bass\, joined choirs\, orchestras\, a capella groups and musical theaters\, and worked as a vocalist in Japan and a singing bartender in NYC. In 2017\, Stacey founded Bébé Music Box to bring Music Together’s award-winning music and movement classes to families and schools in Paris. Our weekly mixed-age family classes are a fun\, dynamic\, and inspiring way for families to connect through music. He teaches Art History at the École Polytechnique in Paris and is the author of several works of nonfiction about art\, artists\, and the relationship between art and politics in the 20th century. He is the grandson of André Schlesser\, known as Dadé\, a singer and cabaret performer who founded the Cabaret L ’Écluse. Mona’s Eyes is Schlesser’s second novel and his American debut. It has been translated into thirty-eight languages\, including Braille. Schlesser was awarded 2025’s Author of the Year by Livres Hebdo. \nAlexandra Suich Bass is The Economist’s Culture editor\, overseeing the paper’s books\, arts and entertainment coverage. Until 2024 the position was based in London; she moved the role to Paris to bring more attention to the city’s cultural offerings and status as a global arts hub.Previously\, she served as senior correspondent for politics\, technology and society\, covering a range of political and public-policy topics. She is author of a cover story on the “Disunited States of America” and a special report arguing that America’s future can be understood by studying California and Texas. Alexandra has also served as The Economist’s finance correspondent and wrote about hedge funds\, private equity and insurance. Alexandra was named Britain’s Young Financial Journalist of the Year by the Wincott Foundation. SUMMARY:Saturday Series: Postcards from Fantasy Lands (ages 6–12)

Participants in this workshop will think about the magical places they’ve visited in books\, and then create a postcard to tell others about the wonderful world they discovered. All supplies will be provided by the Library\, and Library staff will send the postcards following the event. Children are invited to bring in an address (local or international) in order to address their postcards. \nThis event will be hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services Intern Claire Delarue with the help of Library volunteers. This conversation will be moderated by veteran journalist and Visiting Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford\, Renée Kaplan. \nAbout the speakers: \nYaroslav Trofimov is the author of three books of narrative non-fiction and one novel. He has worked around the world as a foreign correspondent of The Wall Street Journal since 1999\, and has served as the newspaper’s chief foreign-affairs correspondent since 2018. Born in Kyiv\, Ukraine\, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in international reporting in 2023\, for his work on Ukraine\, and in 2022\, for his work on Afghanistan\, and won the National Press Club award for political analysis in 2024. His latest non-fiction book\, Our Enemies Will Vanish\, was a finalist of the 2024 Orwell Prize and won the 2024 Peterson Literary Prize. Yaroslav’s novel\, No Country for Love\, based on his family’s history in 20th century Ukraine\, has been published in five languages\, including French. Yaroslav holds an MA from New York University.  \nMargaux Benn is a senior reporter with Le Figaro and a documentary filmmaker. She has reported from a dozen countries\, and lived in Sudan\, Kenya\, the Central African Republic\, Cyprus and Afghanistan – a country which she has been covering for nearly a decade. Her work in Afghanistan and Ukraine has received several French and international awards\, including the Albert Londres Prize and the Bayeux Prize for War Reporters. She is active in various initiatives to promote media literacy and is co-secretary general of France’s feminist journalists association Prenons la Une.  \nRenée Kaplan is a veteran journalist and news leader\, with experience across public broadcasting\, news networks\, and legacy newspapers in France\, the UK and the US. His posthumous collection How to Write About Africa brings together his groundbreaking essays and stories\, including the viral satirical classic of the same name first published in Granta. \nThis panel brings together Achal Prabhala\, editor of the collection\, novelist Hemley Boum\, and critic Jeremy Harding for a wide-ranging conversation on Wainaina’s art\, activism\, and global legacy. Together they will reflect on how his words continue to shape literature\, culture\, and the ways we see Africa today. This conversation will be moderated by Rachel Donadio\, Curator of Cultural Programs. \nAbout the speakers: \nAchal Prabhala is a public health activist\, filmmaker and writer based in Bangalore\, India. He has written for small literary magazines around the world\, including Transition\, Bidoun and Chimurenga\, and edited collections of Indian writing (The Best of Quest\, 2011 and Civil Lines 6\, 2012). He is the editor of How to Write About Africa\, the first instalment of the collected work of Binyavanga Wainaina\, published posthumously after the writer’s death in 2019. \nHemley Boum is a novelist\, poet\, and essayist. Born in Cameroon\, she studied anthropology before continuing her studies in international business in Lille. After her first job in Paris\, she lived in several African countries before settling in France to write. Hemley Boum’s novels depict urbanity\, tradition\, and history as captured in the everyday life of intimate relationships. \nJeremy Harding is a contributing editor at the London Review of Books. His books include Border Vigils: Keeping Migrants Out of the Rich World and Mother Country\, a memoir. Sing along with Lauren and Dan after learning about different styles of singing. The artists will take questions from the audience at the end of the program about the styles of music\, their training\, and more. \nAbout the performers: Italian-American soprano Lauren Libaw has been praised for her sparkling\, “bright-toned” voice (New York Times) as well as her “warmth of tone and intensity of expression” (The New Yorker). She sings internationally in recital\, opera\, and concert at venues including the Opéra Royal de Versailles\, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées\, Palais de Beaux Arts de Bruxelles\, and Royal Albert Hall Elgar Room. A “masterful and affecting” recitalist (operawire.com)\, Lauren has been heard in song in Aix-en-Provence\, Brussels\, Florence\, London\, Los Angeles\, New York\, Paris\, and San Francisco. She does not limit herself to any one style on the recital stage\, often programming music from the Great American Songbook\, contemporary Broadway\, French chanson\, and Yiddish theater traditions alongside classical repertoire. Recent and upcoming operatic roles include Rose de Mai (Le Val d’Andorre)\, Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore)\, Cendrillon (Cendrillon)\, Nannetta (Falstaff)\, Norina (Don Pasquale) and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi); musical theater roles include Maria (West Side Story)\, Eliza (My Fair Lady)\, Julie (Carousel)\, Maria (The Sound of Music)\, Cinderella (Into the Woods)\, Cosette (Les Misérables)\, and Christine (The Phantom of the Opera). Together\, their work invites audiences to consider how poetry can reshape how we move through the world. \nAbout the speakers: \nSasha Debevec-McKenney‘s poems have appeared in The New Yorker\, the New York Review of Books and the Yale Review. She was the 2020-2021 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow at the University of Wisconsin and is currently a creative writing fellow at Emory University. \nOluwaseun Olayiwola is a poet\, critic\, choreographer and performer. He has been published by the Guardian\, The Poetry Review\, PN Review\, Oxford Poetry\, the Telegraph and the Times Literary Supplement. His choreographic work has been presented at the V&A\, The Place\, The Central School of Ballet\, and Studio Voltaire. Seun has an MFA in Choreography from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He lectures in dance at the Kingston School of Art.  \nEmma Gomis is a Catalan American writer and researcher. Her book\, Recupera\, was published by the87Press in February. She has published four pamphlets of poetry\, two of which were cowritten with Anne Waldman. She is a coeditor of New Weathers (Nightboat Books) and Manifold\, a journal of experimental criticism. In 2020\, she was selected by Patricia Spears as The Poetry Project’s Brannan Prize winner. SUMMARY:Saturday Series: Magical Mix Up (ages 6–12)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]How well do you know the magical fantasy worlds of Earthsea\, Narnia\, Hogwarts\, Middle Earth\, Oz\, Orïsa\, and Neverland\, and the terrain of Camp Half-Blood? Working in teams\, you’ll answer trivia and match up spells based on magical places from books. Children are invited to bring along a grown up fro this event! \nThis event will be hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager Celeste Rhoads with the help of Library volunteers. The activity is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. All participants must be able to understand and speak English in order to participate in the program. SUMMARY:Writing Historical Fiction with Amy Plum (ages 12–18)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Discover the spectrum of historical fiction\, from alternative history to fictional biographies. During this workshop\, participants will learn essential tips for researching\, world-building\, and plotting their own historical fiction. \nLight snacks will be provided by the Library. \nAbout Amy Plum: Amy Plum is the author of Die for Me\, an international bestselling Young Adult series set in Paris. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages. Her second series is a duology After the End and Until the Beginning\, which she describes as “a faux-post-apocalyptic\, road trip\, adventure\, romance\, thriller with a bit of magic.” Her third series is the Dreamfall duology: Dreamfall and Neverwake. Amy grew up in Birmingham\, Alabama before venturing further afield to Chicago\, Paris\, London and New York. An art historian by training\, she can be found on most days either daydreaming or writing (or both) in a Parisian café.
