DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Discover Romance Writing\, from “slow burn” to “friends to lovers” to “best friend’s brother.” In this workshop\, participants will learn the elements of a swoon-worthy romance\, how to write characters your readers will ship\, and how to write a cringe-free kiss. \nAll participants in this workshop will receive information about the Library’s Young Authors Fiction Festival 2025. \nAbout Amy Plum: Amy Plum is the author of Die for Me\, an international bestselling Young Adult series set in Paris. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages. Her second series is a duology After the End and Until the Beginning\, which she describes as “a faux-post-apocalyptic\, road trip\, adventure\, romance\, thriller with a bit of magic.” Her third series is the Dreamfall duology: Dreamfall and Neverwake. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nEnjoy classical\, musical theater\, and movie tunes sung by Italian-American soprano Lauren Libaw\, then sing along with Lauren after learning about the styles of singing. Lauren will take questions from the audience at the end of the program about the styles of music\, her training\, and more. \nAbout Lauren Libaw: Italian-American soprano Lauren Libaw has been praised for her sparkling\, “bright-toned” voice (New York Times) as well as her “warmth of tone and intensity of expression” (The New Yorker). She sings internationally in recital\, opera\, and concert at venues including the Opéra Royal de Versailles\, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées\, Palais de Beaux Arts de Bruxelles\, and Royal Albert Hall Elgar Room. A “masterful and affecting” recitalist (operawire.com)\, Lauren has been heard in song in Aix-en-Provence\, Brussels\, Florence\, London\, Los Angeles\, New York\, Paris\, and San Francisco. She does not limit herself to any one style on the recital stage\, often programming music from the Great American Songbook\, contemporary Broadway\, French chanson\, and Yiddish theater traditions alongside classical repertoire. Recent and upcoming operatic roles include Rose de Mai (Le Val d’Andorre)\, Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore)\, Cendrillon (Cendrillon)\, Nannetta (Falstaff)\, Norina (Don Pasquale) and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi); musical theater roles include Maria (West Side Story)\, Eliza (My Fair Lady)\, Julie (Carousel)\, Maria (The Sound of Music)\, Cinderella (Into the Woods)\, Cosette (Les Misérables)\, and Christine (The Phantom of the Opera). Raised in Pasadena\, California\, Lauren is a graduate of Yale University\, where she won the concerto and recital competitions\, three academic prizes and the Sudler Prize for the Arts. She is also an alumnus of the Royal College of Music\, London\, and was a member of the young artist programs of the Aldeburgh Festival\, the Aspen Music Festival\, and the Fondation Royaumont. Through history\, research\, and original reporting\, Desmond exposes the systems that exploit and exclude\, while offering a bold vision for poverty abolition and collective belonging. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Lauren Collins. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Matthew Desmond is a Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University and Founder of The Eviction Lab\, which created the first national dataset on evictions in America. He is the author of five books\, including Poverty\, by America (2023) and Evicted (2016). His work\, praised by The New Yorker and Esquire\, examines why poverty persists in America. Desmond writes for The New York Times Magazine and other outlets. A past MacArthur Fellow\, his research focuses on urban sociology\, poverty\, race\, and ethnography. \nLauren Collins began contributing to the New Yorker in 2003 and became a staff writer in 2008. Her subjects have included Michelle Obama\, Donatella Versace\, the graffiti artist Banksy\, Emmanuel Macron\, the refugee crisis\, and equal pay. Since 2015 she has been based in Paris\, covering stories mainly from France. She is the author of When in French: Love in a Second Language\, which the Times named as one of its 100 Notable Books of 2016. Learn more → \nPulitzer Prize-winning author and translator Jhumpa Lahiri discusses her new work for The Cahiers Series\, Bone Into Stone.  \nIn this exploration of translation-as-metamorphosis\, written after three years collaborating with her friend the classicist Yelena Baraz on a translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses into English\, Lahiri focuses on the theme of stones and human transformation. The text of this work resonates alongside the dynamic and colourful paintings of celebrated artist Jamie Nares. \nAbout the speaker: \nJhumpa Lahiri\, a bilingual writer and translator\, is the Millicent C. McIntosh Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at Barnard College (Columbia University). She received the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for Interpreter of Maladies\, her debut story collection. She is also the author of The Namesake\, Unaccustomed Earth\, and The Lowland\, which was a finalist for both the Man Booker prize and the National Book Award in fiction. Since 2015\, Lahiri has been writing fiction\, essays\, and poetry in Italian: In Altre Parole (In Other Words)\, Il vestito dei libri (The Clothing of Books)\, Dove mi trovo (self-translated as Whereabouts)\, Il quaderno di Nerina\, and Racconti romani (Roman Stories). She has translated three novels by Domenico Starnone and is the editor of The Penguin Classics Book of Italian Short Stories. Lahiri received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2014\, and in 2019 she was named Commendatore of the Italian Republic by President Sergio Mattarerlla. The author suggests that the increased focus on identity in political discourse fails to address the underlying crisis of culture and community and proposes that the solution lies in rebuilding social bonds at the grassroots level. \nThis conversation will be moderated by American Library in Paris 2024-25 Visiting Fellow\, David A. Bell. \nAbout the speakers: \nOlivier Roy is Professor at the European University Institute (Florence) where he headed the ReligioWest research project (funded by the European Research Council). Mr. Roy received an “Agrégation de Philosophie” and a Ph.D. in Political Sciences.  He is the author of The failure of political Islam (Harvard UP 1994)\, Globalized Islam (Columbia University Press\, 2004)\, Holy Ignorance (Hurst/ Oxford UP\, 2010)\, Jihad and Death (Hurst 2017)\, In Search of the Lost Orient (Columbia UP 2017)\,  The Crisis of Culture (Hurst/ Oxford UP 2024). \nDavid A. Bell is the Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Department of History at Princeton where he recently served as director of Princeton’s Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies. Born in New York in 1961\, he was educated at Harvard and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris before completing his doctorate at Princeton in 1991. Before returning to Princeton in 2010 he taught at Yale and Johns Hopkins\, where he also served as Dean of Faculty. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The American Library in Paris and Message Paris are organizing a Read-A-Thon to encourage vacation reading\, and to raise funds for the Library! This kick-off event is open to children and teens who are members of Message Paris or The American Library in Paris. Join us for the kick-off to play trivia\, games\, and more\, then find out how to participate in the Read-A-Thon! \n  \nWHY READ FOR THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS? \nOver a 1-week period\, participants are encouraged to read as much as possible and collect donations based on the number of minutes that they read! Donations will be used to support the American Library in Paris\, a non-profit English language Library founded in 1920\, and the largest English-language lending library on the European continent! It is a place where people gather to explore ideas\, build community and connect with other English speakers. As a non-profit\, we count on your donations to continue to provide programs\, books and services for the English-language community. All participants who turn in a completed Read-A-Thon pack and a donation from at least one sponsor will be entered into a prize drawing. Prizes will be awarded for top readers in each of the following categories: ages 0–3\, ages 4–8\, ages 9–12\, and ages 12–18. \n  \nABOUT MESSAGE PARIS: \nMessage Paris is the largest association for English-speaking parents and parents-to-be in France! It is an entirely volunteer-run\, independent\, non-profit association that provides a social and support network to expectant women\, new mothers and fathers\, and parents of children of all ages. SUMMARY:Story Hour: Trucks and Trains (ages 3–5)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]For this Story Hour\, we’ll read picture books all about trucks\, trains\, and other vehicles. Stories included in this event include picture books such as The Old Truck by Jarrett Pumphrey and Jerome Pumphrey (pictured here). We’ll also sing songs and practice rhymes. \nThis program is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. This participatory program is intended to encourage children to actively engage with stories. Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager Celeste Rhoads and Assistant Children’s and Teens’ Services Librarian Laurine Lucie will read books and lead you and your little one in songs and hand-rhymes during a live\, interactive session. Plan to join in\, sing along\, move around\, and model movement and listening for your little one. We ask that all caregivers put away their phones and other electronic devices for the duration of this program.
