Oppenheimer\, professor at the University of California\, Berkeley School of Law\, for a conversation about the two-hundred-year history of the diversity principle\, from the Enlightenment and the first modern research universities to the concept’s influence on thinkers including John Stuart Mill\, Thurgood Marshall\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, and Pauli Murray.  \nModerated by journalist Isabelle Hanne of Libération\, the discussion will examine the philosophical foundations of diversity and what today’s political backlash reveals about its future in education\, public life\, and democracy. \nAbout the speakers: \nDavid B. Oppenheimer is a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of California\, Berkeley School of Law\, and Co-Director of the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law. He holds a JD degree from Harvard. In his clinical work he has consulted on over 100 discrimination and harassment cases in Asia\, Europe\, North America\, and Latin America. He is the author or editor of ten books on US and global discrimination law. His newest book\, The Diversity Principle: The Story of a Transformative Idea\, was published in 2026 by Yale University Press. \nIsabelle Hanne is a French journalist for Libération\, where she covers international affairs. From 2017 to 2021\, she was the newspaper’s U.S. correspondent\, reporting extensively on American politics and society\, from voters’ polarization to reproductive rights\, race\, gun violence\, culture wars and the deep transformations reshaping the country. She is the author of Le Choix (éditions Goutte d’or\, 2022)\, a novel about abortion in the United States\, exploring the personal and ideological stakes of the issue. Stories presented during our Toddler Time programs include short picture books and board books such as It’s Pumpkin Time! by Zoe Hall (pictured here)\, which will be featured during this session. \nToddler Time sessions are hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members\, and include age-appropriate stories selected by the Library’s Children’s and Teens’ services librarians. Enjoy stories\, music\, movement and rhymes and help develop your child’s early literacy skills. Stay for play and social time after the event. \nEach child must be accompanied by an adult chaperone\, and chaperones are required to remain with their children for the duration of the program. Parents and caregivers are expected to sit with their children beside them\, or in their laps\, and participate in the program. His feature articles and essays have appeared in the Atlantic\, New Yorker\, New York Times Magazine\, New York Review of Books\, Vanity Fair\, and many other publications in the United States and abroad. His new book\, Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America\, was published to wide acclaim in 2025. \nMaya Kandel is an independent researcher specializing in the United States. Trained as a historian\, she is also an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Research on the English-Speaking World (CREW) at Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris 3). In this urgent conversation\, he reflects on his experience of captivity\, the enduring importance of a free press\, and the contradictions of contemporary Russia. \nAbout the speaker: \nEvan Gershkovich is a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal based in Berlin. Born in New Jersey to Soviet émigrés\, he lived in Russia for more than five years before his 2023 arrest and subsequent sixteen-month imprisonment on false espionage charges. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Economist\, and Foreign Policy\, and he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2025 as part of an investigative team for the Journal. Stories presented during our Toddler Time programs include short picture books and board books such as Feast for 10 by Cathryn Falwell and A Parade of Elephants by Kevin Henkes  (pictured here)\, which will be featured during this session. \nToddler Time sessions are hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members\, and include age-appropriate stories selected by the Library’s Children’s and Teens’ services librarians. Enjoy stories\, music\, movement and rhymes and help develop your child’s early literacy skills. Stay for play and social time after the event. \nEach child must be accompanied by an adult chaperone\, and chaperones are required to remain with their children for the duration of the program. Parents and caregivers are expected to sit with their children beside them\, or in their laps\, and participate in the program. But actively making music—with our voices and our bodies—is important to children’s overall development. Since 1987\, Music Together\, has introduced millions of children\, parents\, and teachers to the joys of music-making and the powerful benefits of having music in their lives. In our family workshops children and parents learn together through active exploration and live\, meaningful interaction. So\, take out the earbuds and pick up the instruments we were all given at birth—ourselves! Each child (aged 0–5) should accompany one of their favorite grownups. \nAbout Stacey Pavesi Debré:  An American in Paris since 2014\, Stacey has been passionate about music and learning her whole life. She studied piano and string bass\, joined choirs\, orchestras\, a capella groups and musical theaters\, and worked as a vocalist in Japan and a singing bartender in NYC. In 2017\, Stacey founded Bébé Music Box to bring Music Together’s award-winning music and movement classes to families and schools in Paris. Laurine and Celeste will read several picture books on the theme: Eat Up! They will also lead the group in songs and hand rhymes. This participatory program is intended to encourage children to actively engage with stories. Our librarians will read books and lead you and your little ones in songs and hand-rhymes during this live\, interactive session. Participants should plan to join in\, sing along\, move around\, and model movement and listening for your little one. We ask that all caregivers put away their phones and other electronic devices for the duration of this program. Her poetry has been widely translated and has been the recipient of numerous awards\, among them the Pulitzer Prize\, the Forward Prize (UK)\, the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, the International Nonino Prize\, and the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress.
