SUMMARY:Make It Last: A Mending Workshop with Ella Springer (ages 12–18)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The practice of mending has existed for as long as we’ve been creating and wearing clothing. As fast fashion and even faster consumption become the norm\, mending skills are slowly being forgotten between generations. In this workshop\, participants will learn about what we wear\, how we consume\, and practice basic mending skills to make repairs to our clothing. Materials will be provided for practice\, and you are also welcome to bring in your clothing items. Jeans are great for practice! Experienced crafters and novices are all welcome to join this event! \nAbout Ella Springer: Ella Springer is an artist and designer originally from Michigan and currently based in Paris while completing her thesis at Parsons Paris. Through her work\, she is on a mission to revive the skills and communities surrounding clothing repair and sustainable hand making practices. In today’s fashion culture these skills are more crucial than ever. Her other books include Adèle\, Sex and Lies\, Country of Others and Watch Us Dance\, which are the first and second parts of a trilogy of novels based on her family’s roots in revolutionary Morocco. Slimani is French president Emmanuel Macron’s personal representative for the promotion of the French language and culture. She has received numerous honors for her literary and cultural contributions\, including the Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom\, and was the chair of the jury for the 2023 International Booker Prize. Stories presented during our Toddler Time programs include short picture books and board books such as On Mother’s Lap by Ann Herbert Scott (pictured here)\, which will be featured during this session. \nToddler Time sessions are hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members\, and include age-appropriate stories selected by the Library’s Children’s and Teens’ services librarians. Whether you’ve played the game at summer camp every year\, or you’ve only ever read about it while enjoying the Percy Jackson books\, you’re welcome to join our game. We’ll meet at the Library to divide into teams and go over the rules of the game\, then we’ll set out as a group to the Champ de Mars to play the game outdoors. We’ll be playing in two teams. Your mission: in a single afternoon\, work together to brainstorm\, plan out\, and write a full-length short story\, complete with compelling characters\, an exciting plot\, and maybe even a few surprise twists! While each writer will contribute their own scenes and their own voice\, the story has to fit together into a coherent and satisfying whole. Through this madcap\, fast-paced workshop\, you’ll experience a snapshot of the full writing process—and witness first-hand the ways that collaboration and fearless speed-writing can fuel creativity and make writing more fun than ever. \nLight snacks and drinks will be provided by the Library. Please note the late end time for this event. \nAbout Noah Weisz: Noah Weisz is a fiction writer and educator with an MFA in Creative Writing and over a decade of experience helping students of all ages unleash the stories they have inside.  Noah‘s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the A. There There was one of the New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year\, and won the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize and the Pen/Hemingway Award. There There was also longlisted for the National Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent novel\, Wandering Stars\, was published in February 2024. Orange is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. Citchens\, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Chris Pavone\, alongside documentary photographer Peter Van Agtmael\, bring their perspectives together to paint a sensitive portrait of a fractured country\, where the personal constantly sheds light on the political. \nThis event will be moderated by Curator of Cultural Programs at the American Library in Paris\, Rachel Donadio. \nAbout Festival America: \nThe 12th edition of AMERICA will take place in Vincennes from 24–27 September 2026\, welcoming over 60 American authors to celebrate 250 years of the United States through North American literature and culture.\n \nEvery two years since 2002\, the AMERICA festival has brought together writers from North America. Together with Madeleine Schwartz\, editor-in-chief of The Dial and co-editor of How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump\, they will explore how journalists around the world are reporting on an era defined by shifting alliances\, drone warfare\, and competing visions of America’s global role. \nAbout the speakers: \nNataliya Gumenyuk is a Ukrainian journalist and author specializing in foreign affairs and conflict reporting. She is the co-founder and CEO of the Public Interest Journalism Lab\, which fosters constructive discussion around complex social issues. After Russia’s full-scale invasion\, the organization co-founded The Reckoning Project to document war crimes. As a foreign correspondent\, Gumenyuk has reported from more than 50 countries and regularly contributes to Foreign Affairs\, the Guardian\, and the Atlantic\, etc. She is the author of several documentaries and books\, including The Lost Island\, The Maidan Tahrir\, and The Scariest Days of My Life. Gumenyuk also co-founded and headed Hromadske TV\, an independent Ukrainian broadcaster.   \nMadeleine Schwartz is editor in chief of The Dial\, the award-winning magazine of international writing and editor\, with the staff of The Dial\, of How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump.
