Together with Madeleine Schwartz\, editor-in-chief of The Dial and co-editor of How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump\, they will explore how journalists around the world are reporting on an era defined by shifting alliances\, drone warfare\, and competing visions of America’s global role. \nAbout the speakers: \nNataliya Gumenyuk is a Ukrainian journalist and author specializing in foreign affairs and conflict reporting. She is the co-founder and CEO of the Public Interest Journalism Lab\, which fosters constructive discussion around complex social issues. After Russia’s full-scale invasion\, the organization co-founded The Reckoning Project to document war crimes. As a foreign correspondent\, Gumenyuk has reported from more than 50 countries and regularly contributes to Foreign Affairs\, the Guardian\, and the Atlantic\, etc. She is the author of several documentaries and books\, including The Lost Island\, The Maidan Tahrir\, and The Scariest Days of My Life. Gumenyuk also co-founded and headed Hromadske TV\, an independent Ukrainian broadcaster.   \nMadeleine Schwartz is editor in chief of The Dial\, the award-winning magazine of international writing and editor\, with the staff of The Dial\, of How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump. She lives in Paris\, where she writes about the rise of the far right\, urban politics and art fraud. Her work appears in the London Review of Books\, the New Yorker and the New York Review of Books\, where she previously worked as an editor. Stories featured in this event include picture books such as Found by Salina Yoon\, and Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Maddour\, illustrated by Daniel Egneus (pictured here). We’ll also sing songs and practice rhymes. \nThis program is entirely in English\, and no translation will be provided. This participatory program is intended to encourage children to actively engage with stories. Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members will read books in English and lead you and your little one in songs and hand-rhymes during a live\, interactive session. Plan to join in\, sing along\, move around\, and model movement and listening for your little one. Drawing on more than a decade of reporting from a single neighborhood in Istanbul\, journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Suzy Hansen explores the rise of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from reform-minded technocrat to authoritarian leader in her new book\, From Life Itself. Through the lives of Turks\, Kurds\, and Syrian refugees living side by side\, Hansen traces the local realities behind sweeping political change\, asking what Turkey’s recent history reveals about the resurgence of authoritarianism—and what it can teach us about democracies around the world today. \nAbout the speaker: \nSuzy Hansen lived in Istanbul for more than a decade\, where she was a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and many other publications. Her first book\, Notes on a Foreign Country\, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction and the winner of the Overseas Press Club of America’s Cornelius Ryan Award. Her second book\, From Life Itself: Turkey\, Istanbul and Neighborhood in the Age of Erdogan\, was  published in April 2026. Stories presented during our Toddler Time programs include short picture books and board books such as Still This Love Goes On by Buffy Sainte-Marie\, illustrated by Julie Flett (pictured here)\, which will be featured during this session. \nToddler Time sessions are hosted by Children’s and Teens’ Services staff members\, and include age-appropriate stories selected by the Library’s Children’s and Teens’ services librarians. Enjoy stories\, music\, movement and rhymes and help develop your child’s early literacy skills. Stay for play and social time after the event. \nEach child must be accompanied by an adult chaperone\, and chaperones are required to remain with their children for the duration of the program. Parents and caregivers are expected to sit with their children beside them\, or in their laps\, and participate in the program. Kids can take home fun activity sheets and stickers to remember the visit. \nMs. Sánchez Vegara will be signing books after the event\, and copies will be available for purchase at the Library. \nAbout the author: About the author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara is the author and creator of the internationally best-selling series Little People\, BIG DREAMS. Her books combine creativity with learning\, aiming to establish a new and fresh relationship between children and pop culture. Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara\, born in Barcelona\, Spain\, is a writer and creative director in constant search of new concepts for children’s books. Her books combine creativity with learning\, aiming to establish a new and fresh relationship between children and pop culture. It took Maria Isabel almost 40 years and most of her savings to make her dream of publishing a book come true. In 2012\, after 20 years of working in advertising\, she self-published her first book. Two years later\, she released what was meant to be a birth present for her twin nieces\, Alba and Claudia: the very first title in the Little People\, BIG DREAMS series. Wrongfully arrested in Russia in March 2023 on fabricated espionage charges\, Gershkovich spent 500 days in prison before his release in a landmark prisoner exchange. In this urgent conversation\, he reflects on his experience of captivity\, the enduring importance of a free press\, and the contradictions of contemporary Russia. \nAbout the speaker: \nEvan Gershkovich is a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal based in Berlin. Born in New Jersey to Soviet émigrés\, he lived in Russia for more than five years before his 2023 arrest and subsequent sixteen-month imprisonment on false espionage charges. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Economist\, and Foreign Policy\, and he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2025 as part of an investigative team for the Journal.
