SUMMARY:Master Shot Film Club Meeting (ages 12–18) (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\nLed by Paris-based filmmaker and writer Clarence Tokley\, the purpose of this club is to allow budding filmmakers the opportunity to produce high quality short films. \n\n\nThe Master Shot Film Club provides a space for teens to explore all aspects of film-making\, including the development and production process\, script-writing\, camera work\, directing\, acting\, editing and much more\, not to mention that you’ll get to know other young filmmakers in the community! This club is open to teens ages 12–18 in the Paris area who are fluent in English\, by application. Applications were open through the end of August 2022 and are closed for the 2022–2023 film club. Applications for the 2023–2024 club opened on 31 March. Apply to here  for the 2023–2024 Master Shot Film Club. \nAbout Clarence Tokley:Clarence Tokley is a Paris-based teacher\, filmmaker\, and writer. A native of New Jersey\, Clarence attended Rutgers University\, obtaining a degree in History and Film Studies. Clarence then attended the New York Film Academy in New York City\, before packing up everything and moving to Paris—he wanted to get a taste of the European style of storytelling. He fully immersed himself in the film industry and quickly landed his first job in Paris. Some of his credits include Rush Hour 3\, Truth in 24\, Exes\, and the Cherry Orchard. Clarence also does voice-over work in Paris. Along with his duties as teacher of the BAW Teen and Youth Acting courses\, he is the director of camps in France and provides workshops and private coaching. YAFF is a creative writing initiative that aims to strengthen community among English-speakers in the Paris area through the art and craft of storytelling. The Library believes that creative writing plays an important role in a child’s literacy development. Creative writing is fun and a great tool to help broaden a child’s imagination and foster a life-long love of reading and writing. \nYAFF is free of charge and open to all students ages 5-18 in France who write in English. We’ll focus on letting the conscious go and work on fun creative exercises the surrealists used to do to explore how dreaming and day dreaming impact the creative process. \n  \nLight refreshments will be provided by the Library. \n  \nAbout Jion Sheibani: Jion is the author and illustrator of the young adult novel The Silver Chain\, as well as the picture book Lily & The Polar Bears and The Worries young fiction series. She grew up in Brighton and now lives in Paris with her family. She’s a self-taught illustrator and studied English literature at Oxford University. When she moved to Paris\, she taught English to students at Sciences Po and ENSAE universities before opening her own language school for children\, Anglofun. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]During this presentation with guest Richard Montauk\, parents and teens will explore the options for financing a university education in top schools. We’ll take a look at the options (from graduating college early to attending free(ish) colleges). \nThis presentation will include an overview of co-op programs\, starting at community college\, undergraduate options in the U.S.\, undergraduate degrees abroad\, combining programs\, and more. \nAlthough the focus of this presentation is strategic in nature\, it will be filled with examples illustrating how to strategically plan for a university education\, and how to plan financially. \nNote: this presentation will not cover the usual\, insufficient solutions to the problem: getting need-based financial aid\, merit aid\, or third-party scholarships\, or saving for college in a tax-efficient manner. Instead\, we’ll look at dozens of inexpensive options at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (while retaining our focus on elite universities). \nSubstantial time will be available at the end of the presentation for questions. \n  \nAbout Richard Montauk: Richard Montauk is the author of a series of best-selling guides\, all published by Prentice Hall\, including How to Get Into the Top Colleges and How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join us for a game of capture the flag on the Champ de Mars (weather permitting). We’ll meet at the Library to divide into teams and go over the rules of the game\, then we’ll set out as a group to the Champ de Mars to play the game outdoors. We’ll be playing in two teams. Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager Celeste Rhoads\, and Master Shot Film Club host Clarence Tokley will each lead a team. \nIn the case of light rain\, we’ll go ahead and play. In the event of heavy rain or storms\, we’ll move the event inside to play board games. You are welcome to call the Children’s and Teens’ Services Desk directly for an update before the event. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The American Library in Paris and Message Paris are organizing a Read-A-Thon to encourage vacation reading\, and to raise funds for the Library! This event is open to children and teens who are members of Message Paris or The American Library in Paris. Over a 1-week period\, participants are encouraged to read as much as possible and collect donations based on the number of minutes that they read! \n  \nWHY READ FOR THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS? \nDonations will be used to support the American Library in Paris\, a non-profit English language Library founded in 1920\, and the largest English-language lending library on the European continent! It is a place where people gather to explore ideas\, build community and connect with other English speakers. As a non-profit\, we count on your donations to continue to provide programs\, books and services for the English-language community. All participants who turn in a completed Read-a-Thon pack and a donation from at least one sponsor will be entered into a prize drawing. SUMMARY:The Vocabulary of U.S. College Admissions with College Goals (ages 12–adult)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Given the demands of the American university application process\, students interested in pursuing higher education in the U.S. are well advised to begin preparing early in their high school career for its demands\, perhaps even before they embark on their final two years of study toward the French bac or IB. In this presentation with guests from College Goals\, teens and their parents will explore the application and admissions process for US colleges and universities and how best to prepare. What do families need to know for their students to be successful and satisfied by the university search and application process? How can students produce a strong and interesting U.S. university application? In the first of a series of presentations on aspects of the American college application process\, College Goals’ counselor\, Andrea van Niekerk will discuss the concepts\, language\, and protocols students need to be aware of if they hope to apply to US institutions. \n  \nAbout Andrea van Niekerk: Andrea served for a decade as Associate Director of Admission\, with a focus on international applicants\, and as Freshman Academic Adviser at Brown University\, and as Residential Fellow in a dorm at Stanford. Still based in Silicon Valley\, she now works with both American and international families as part of College Goals. Andrea has over 20 years of experience in college admission and academic advising. SUMMARY:Teen Night: Mystery Writing with Noah Weisz (ages 12–18)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this workshop with Noah Weisz participants will learn about structure\, suspicion\, and suspense while exploring the craft secrets of clues and red herrings. You’ll get to plan out and draft part or all of your own mystery short story—and before the workshop’s over\, we’ll try to crack each other’s cases! \nAbout Noah Weisz: Noah Weisz is a fiction writer and dedicated educator with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and over nine years’ experience helping students of all ages unleash the stories they have inside. Noah’s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the Katherine Paterson Prize for middle-grade fiction\, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award\, and the F(r)iction Short Story Contest. He is also a three-time finalist for the Bath Children’s Novel Award. Originally from Washington\, DC and a recent arrival in Paris\, he currently teaches creative writing workshops and courses at several venues including the International School of Paris and Collège Sévigné. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]No acting experience is necessary to join this theater workshop! Unlock your creativity and get to know other teens in the community as you try out improv games and theater exercises with coach Angelica Brewis. All abilities welcome!\n \nDrinks and light refreshments will be provided by the Library. \nAbout Angelica Brewis: Born in Jamaica\, Angelica is a global citizen who has traveled extensively and lived in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, Australia\, England\, and now Paris. While in high school she took an interest in photography where one of her black and white portraits gave her recognition winning first place. During this time she learned how to develop and enlarge her black and white photography in a darkroom. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography in Toronto\, Canada. After a year working as a freelance photographer\, Angelica went back to school to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Education to become an elementary school teacher. She currently teaches at a bilingual school in Paris. Motivated by her desire to continue learning\, Angelica recently returned to university to complete an MEd in Developmental Psychology in Education while working full time. This led her to founding an English after school theater activity\, Paris Improv for Kids\, for students to develop social-emotional learning. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Playing varsity sports in college can create a sense of belonging\, help forge an important sense of identity\, increase executive functioning as well as academic performance\, and—in some cases—help in the admissions and scholarship process. But athletic recruiting for collegiate sports can seem like a maze: intentionally confusing with plenty of unforeseeable turns. In this presentation\, with Brooke Libby of College Goals\, we will discuss the landscape of American college sports\, the academic and athletic requirements for recruitment\, as well as some of the steps to begin the process—from attending summer ID camps to registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Substantial time will be available—during and after the presentation—for questions. \nAbout Richard Montauk: Richard Montauk is the author of a series of best-selling guides\, all published by Prentice Hall\, including How to Get Into the Top Colleges and How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs. Learn how he put his research about thirteenth-century France together and mixed it up with his own stories to create this tale\, then stay for a Q&A with the author!\n\nMr. Gidwitz will be signing books\, and books will be available for purchase at this event courtesy of a local bookseller.\n\nAbout Adam Gidwitz: Adam Gidwitz is the author of the Newbery Honor book The Inquisitor’s Tale\, the bestseller A Tale Dark & Grimm and its companions\, and the bestselling series The Unicorn Rescue Society. He is also the creator and narrator of the award winning podcast Grimm\, Grimmer\, Grimmest\, and he helped produce the Emmy-nominated animated adaptation of A Tale Dark & Grimm for Netflix. We’ll meet at the Library to divide into teams and go over the rules of the game\, then we’ll set out as a group to the Champ de Mars to play the game outdoors. We’ll be playing in two teams.
