DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the evening on Saturday 29 October\, the American Library in Paris will turn into a Haunted Library\, with guided tours throughout the dark\, and winding Library stacks. Grab your bravest friends\, and explore the Library as you’ve never seen it before. Tours last 20-30 minutes\, and must be booked in advance. Short horror films created by the Library’s Master Shot Film Club will be screened in the Library’s Reading Room\, followed by a costume contest at 20h30. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nTICKETS REQUIRED: Tickets must be purchased in advance. Members may purchase tickets at the Children’s & Teens’ Services Desk beginning on Saturday 1 October: 10€ per person (Library members)\, 20€ per person (non-members). Library members may purchase up to two tickets for non-member guests\, however the non-member fee applies. If tickets remain on 15 October\, they will then be available for non-members. Each person attending this event must have a valid ticket. No children under the age of 8 will be admitted. Your characters are annoying you\, your plot is putting you to sleep\, and the only place the story’s going is nowhere—fast. You’re tempted to throw in the towel. If this sounds all too familiar\, then this event is for you! \nIn this two-part workshop hosted by Noah Weisz\, we’ll explore the common reasons why writing projects lose steam in the middle\, and we’ll experiment with a variety of techniques to breathe new life into a sagging story. Come prepared with your work-in-progress and the challenges you’re facing\, and get ready to roll up your sleeves. Noah’s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the Katherine Paterson Prize for middle-grade fiction\, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award\, and the F(r)iction Short Story Contest. He is also a three-time finalist for the Bath Children’s Novel Award. Originally from Washington\, DC and a recent arrival in Paris\, he currently teaches creative writing workshops and courses at several venues including the International School of Paris and Collège Sévigné. Unlock your creativity and get to know other teens in the community as you try out improv games and theater exercises with coach Angelica Brewis. All abilities welcome!\n \nDrinks and light refreshments will be provided by the Library. \nAbout Angelica Brewis: Born in Jamaica\, Angelica is a global citizen who has traveled extensively and lived in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, Australia\, England\, and now Paris. While in high school she took an interest in photography where one of her black and white portraits gave her recognition winning first place. During this time she learned how to develop and enlarge her black and white photography in a darkroom. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography in Toronto\, Canada. After a year working as a freelance photographer\, Angelica went back to school to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Education to become an elementary school teacher. She currently teaches at a bilingual school in Paris. Motivated by her desire to continue learning\, Angelica recently returned to university to complete an MEd in Developmental Psychology in Education while working full time. This led her to founding an English after school theater activity\, Paris Improv for Kids\, for students to develop social-emotional learning. SUMMARY:Setting Yourself Up for Success: An Overview of the U.S. College Admissions Process with Richard Montauk (ages 14–Adult)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\nWe’ll explore what it takes to get into a top college (in the U.S. and abroad) and how best to prepare—over time—to do so. This presentation will include how different colleges evaluate applicants (in light of their offerings and missions\, as well as the composition of their applicant pools) and how you can maximize your students’ chances by helping them: Acquire strong academic credentials and demonstrate intellectual curiosity\nSelect and ace the right standardized exams\nShape their non-academic profile\nMake the most of summers and vacations\nCombat a privileged image\nDistinguish themselves in a crowded applicant pool\n\nAlthough the focus of this presentation is strategic in nature\, it will be filled with examples illustrating how to achieve each of the above efficiently and effectively. \n(Note: this is targeted to 9th \, 10th \, and 11th grade students and their parents\, not 12th graders.) Substantial time will be available at the end of the presentation for questions. \n  \nAbout Richard Montauk: Richard Montauk is the author of a series of best-selling guides\, all published by Prentice Hall\, including How to Get Into the Top Colleges and How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs. His most recent books include College Interviews: The Definitive Guide and Getting into Brown: Successful Applicants’ Essays\, Resumes\, and Interviews. He received a BA in literature from Brown University\, an MA in government from Harvard\, an MS in finance\, and a JD from Stanford Law School. Pursuant to a graduate fellowship\, he also studied at the London School of Economics and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (University of London). After graduating from Stanford\, Richard worked as a corporate lawyer for Latham & Watkins in Los Angeles\, then as a corporate strategy consultant for Bain & Co. in London\, before devoting himself full-time to admissions consulting. SUMMARY:Teen Night: Stuck in the Middle (part 2) (ages 12–18)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]You’ve made it to Chapter 7\, and suddenly you’re lost. The thrill you felt as you churned out those opening pages is gone. Your characters are annoying you\, your plot is putting you to sleep\, and the only place the story’s going is nowhere—fast. You’re tempted to throw in the towel. If this sounds all too familiar\, then this event is for you! \nIn this two-part workshop hosted by Noah Weisz\, we’ll explore the common reasons why writing projects lose steam in the middle\, and we’ll experiment with a variety of techniques to breathe new life into a sagging story. Come prepared with your work-in-progress and the challenges you’re facing\, and get ready to roll up your sleeves. Noah’s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the Katherine Paterson Prize for middle-grade fiction\, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award\, and the F(r)iction Short Story Contest. He is also a three-time finalist for the Bath Children’s Novel Award. Originally from Washington\, DC and a recent arrival in Paris\, he currently teaches creative writing workshops and courses at several venues including the International School of Paris and Collège Sévigné. The YLP is led by the teen participants themselves with the guidance and support of Toastmasters from several groups in the Paris area and the American Library in Paris’ Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager. SUMMARY:Master Shot Film Club Meeting (ages 12–18) (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\nLed by Paris-based filmmaker and writer Clarence Tokley\, the purpose of this club is to allow budding filmmakers the opportunity to produce high quality short films. \n\n\nThe Master Shot Film Club provides a space for teens to explore all aspects of film-making\, including the development and production process\, script-writing\, camera work\, directing\, acting\, editing and much more\, not to mention that you’ll get to know other young filmmakers in the community! This club is open to teens ages 12–18 in the Paris area who are fluent in English\, by application. Applications were open through the end of August 2022 and are closed for the 2022–2023 film club. Applications for the 2023–2024 club opened on 31 March. Apply to here  for the 2023–2024 Master Shot Film Club. \nAbout Clarence Tokley:Clarence Tokley is a Paris-based teacher\, filmmaker\, and writer. A native of New Jersey\, Clarence attended Rutgers University\, obtaining a degree in History and Film Studies. Clarence then attended the New York Film Academy in New York City\, before packing up everything and moving to Paris—he wanted to get a taste of the European style of storytelling. He fully immersed himself in the film industry and quickly landed his first job in Paris. Some of his credits include Rush Hour 3\, Truth in 24\, Exes\, and the Cherry Orchard. Clarence also does voice-over work in Paris. We’ll take a look at the options (from graduating college early to attending free(ish) colleges). \nThis presentation will include an overview of co-op programs\, starting at community college\, undergraduate options in the U.S.\, undergraduate degrees abroad\, combining programs\, and more. \nAlthough the focus of this presentation is strategic in nature\, it will be filled with examples illustrating how to strategically plan for a university education\, and how to plan financially. \nNote: this presentation will not cover the usual\, insufficient solutions to the problem: getting need-based financial aid\, merit aid\, or third-party scholarships\, or saving for college in a tax-efficient manner. This event is open to children and teens who are members of Message Paris or The American Library in Paris. Over a 1-week period\, participants are encouraged to read as much as possible and collect donations based on the number of minutes that they read! \n  \nWHY READ FOR THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS? \nDonations will be used to support the American Library in Paris\, a non-profit English language Library founded in 1920\, and the largest English-language lending library on the European continent! It is a place where people gather to explore ideas\, build community and connect with other English speakers. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Given the demands of the American university application process\, students interested in pursuing higher education in the U.S. are well advised to begin preparing early in their high school career for its demands\, perhaps even before they embark on their final two years of study toward the French bac or IB. In this presentation with guests from College Goals\, teens and their parents will explore the application and admissions process for US colleges and universities and how best to prepare. What do families need to know for their students to be successful and satisfied by the university search and application process? How can students produce a strong and interesting U.S. university application? In the first of a series of presentations on aspects of the American college application process\, College Goals’ counselor\, Andrea van Niekerk will discuss the concepts\, language\, and protocols students need to be aware of if they hope to apply to US institutions. \n  \nAbout Andrea van Niekerk: Andrea served for a decade as Associate Director of Admission\, with a focus on international applicants\, and as Freshman Academic Adviser at Brown University\, and as Residential Fellow in a dorm at Stanford. Still based in Silicon Valley\, she now works with both American and international families as part of College Goals. Andrea has over 20 years of experience in college admission and academic advising. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this workshop with Noah Weisz participants will learn about structure\, suspicion\, and suspense while exploring the craft secrets of clues and red herrings. You’ll get to plan out and draft part or all of your own mystery short story—and before the workshop’s over\, we’ll try to crack each other’s cases! \nAbout Noah Weisz: Noah Weisz is a fiction writer and dedicated educator with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and over nine years’ experience helping students of all ages unleash the stories they have inside. Noah’s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the Katherine Paterson Prize for middle-grade fiction\, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award\, and the F(r)iction Short Story Contest. He is also a three-time finalist for the Bath Children’s Novel Award. Originally from Washington\, DC and a recent arrival in Paris\, he currently teaches creative writing workshops and courses at several venues including the International School of Paris and Collège Sévigné. Unlock your creativity and get to know other teens in the community as you try out improv games and theater exercises with coach Angelica Brewis. All abilities welcome!\n \nDrinks and light refreshments will be provided by the Library. \nAbout Angelica Brewis: Born in Jamaica\, Angelica is a global citizen who has traveled extensively and lived in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, Australia\, England\, and now Paris. While in high school she took an interest in photography where one of her black and white portraits gave her recognition winning first place. During this time she learned how to develop and enlarge her black and white photography in a darkroom. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography in Toronto\, Canada. After a year working as a freelance photographer\, Angelica went back to school to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Education to become an elementary school teacher. She currently teaches at a bilingual school in Paris. Motivated by her desire to continue learning\, Angelica recently returned to university to complete an MEd in Developmental Psychology in Education while working full time. This led her to founding an English after school theater activity\, Paris Improv for Kids\, for students to develop social-emotional learning.
