DESCRIPTION:Understanding the American University Application Process\n\nwith College Goals\nFor teens ages 14+ and their guardians\n \n  \n\n\nGiven the demands of the American university application process\, students interested in pursuing higher education in the US are well advised to begin preparing early in their high school career\, before they embark on their final two years of study toward the French bac or IB. What do families need to know for their students to be successful and satisfied by the university search and application process? How do students produce a strong and interesting US university application? College Goals’ counselor\, Andrea van Niekerk\, will address the complexities of the American university application system\, with special attention to the process and mechanics. She will also take questions about applications to the UK and Canada. \nAndrea van Niekerk served for a decade as Associate Director of Admission\, with a focus on international applicants\, and as Freshman Academic Adviser at Brown University\, and as Residential Fellow in a dorm at Stanford. Still based in Silicon Valley\, she now works with both American and international families as part of College Goals. Andrea has over 20 years of experience in college admission and academic advising. She is a member of NACAC\, HECA and WACAC. \nCollege Goals is a university admission consulting practice specializing in counseling families interested in higher education opportunities in the US and in English-medium universities around the world. The team of counselors collectively offers decades of professional experience in higher education. DESCRIPTION:Summer Reading Challenge\n\nFor children and teens of all ages\n \n\n  \n  \nHow does the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge work?   \nLibrary members who are interested in participating must register for the Summer Reading Challenge: Read the Universe (for ages 0–12) online. Registered participants may then stop by the Children’s and Teens’ Services Desk at the Library to pick up their Challenge Cards or download them online. For each day that you read 30 minutes or more\, fill in one of the spaces on the card. After five days\, the card will be complete. When a Challenge Card is completed\, stop by the Children’s and Teens’ Services Desk to drop off your Challenge Card(s) in our raffle box and enter to win great prizes. A raffle will be held each week throughout the summer. The more challenges you complete\, the more chances you have to win. For young children\, being read to counts as well! \n\nComplete as many challenges as you can between 18 June and 27 August 2022 and turn in your challenge cards at the Children’s and Teens’ Services Desk by 27 August to be entered into the grand prize drawing\, and earn your certificate of participation. \n  \nHow does the 10 Book Challenge for Teens work? \nLibrary members who are interested in participating must register for the 10 Book Challenge (for ages 12–18) online. DESCRIPTION:Paper Circuits Coding Workshop\nWith David Zikovitz\nFor ages 12–18 \n\n\n  \nWe all know paper is magic. Putting words and pictures on paper can transport us to new worlds\, teach us new ideas\, and give us new experiences. In this workshop we’ll find out what else paper can do\, giving it a technological upgrade and turning it into so much more! We’ll incorporate conductive materials and electronics components and explore paper’s structural qualities to make cards\, books\, or sculptures that come to three-dimensional\, interactive life. \n  \nAbout David Zikovitz: David is a Paris-based maker and educator. Originally from Toronto\, Canada\, he has taught and studied in international schools and learning communities around the world\, including in Tokyo\, Milan\, and most recently New York City. He currently teaches coding and digital fabrication at Columbia University’s Teachers College where he is also a member of the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab and the Snow Day Learning Lab\, both dedicated to researching and developing innovative technological learning experiences for young people. Kirsty’s contributions since she first began at the Library in 2015 are innumerable. She spearheaded the effort to grow YAFF to the incredible festival it has become\, and she set a very high bar for accessibility in our catalog\, along with assisting voracious readers find great books every day she comes to work. Kirsty will remain a part of the library community\, and will continue as YAFF Coordinator on a volunteer basis for 2023. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Paper cut art is a folk art that plays with positive and negative spaces\, and involves carefully cutting out a design through a piece of paper with a sharp knife. The areas of the paper left are the light areas of the design and the cut out areas become the darker contrast which then can be layered on top of a contrasting background. It is popular in China and Indonesia\, as well as Switzerland where it is known as Schehrenschnitte. In Mexico artists use inexpensive tissue paper to create papel picado for both religious and secular purposes. \n  \nAbout Shalinee Laval: Shalinee Laval makes paper cut art inspired by children’s fairy-tales. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nGet to know other creative teens and aspiring photographers as you explore photography with Angelica Brewis. Participants will ideally have a camera with manual capacities (to change the ISO settings\, aperture\, etc.) so that they can learn technical aspects of photography as well as working on their technique\, however several cameras will be provided. \nAbout Angelica Brewis: Born in Jamaica\, Angelica is a global citizen who has traveled extensively and lived in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, Australia\, England\, and now Paris.  While in high school she took an interest in photography where one of her black and white portraits gave her recognition winning first place. She learned how to develop and enlarge her black and white photography in a darkroom and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography in Toronto\, Canada. \nAfter a year working as a freelance photographer\, Angelica returned to university to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Education and become an elementary school teacher. She currently teaches at a bilingual school in Paris while simultaneously pursuing her passion for photography. In this workshop with David Zikovitz we’ll find out what else paper can do\, giving it a technological upgrade and turning it into so much more! We’ll incorporate conductive materials and electronics components and explore paper’s structural qualities to make monster cards\, books\, or sculptures that come to three-dimensional\, interactive life. \nAbout David Zikovitz: David is a Paris-based maker and educator. Originally from Toronto\, Canada\, he has taught and studied in international schools and learning communities around the world\, including in Tokyo\, Milan\, and most recently New York City. He currently teaches coding and digital fabrication at Columbia University’s Teachers College where he is also a member of the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab and the Snow Day Learning Lab\, both dedicated to researching and developing innovative technological learning experiences for young people. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This family event for Library members features a Halloween story time and a musical performance for our youngest members\, as well as games and surprises throughout the Library. The event will culminate in a costume contest. Costume prizes will be awarded in several categories for children\, with a special prize for parents. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nThis event will feature a musical performance by Jessica Moore. Jessica is a singer\, vocal arranger\, music teacher and songwriter. She studied vocal performance at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London where she graduated with first class honours. When in London\, she was apart of professional choir ProVoc. In Paris\, Jessica runs VOXXY\, an a cappella choir for women (whether they sing professionally or not!) She believes that music is for everyone!  Jessica is also the lead vocalist of M U U N E. She works as a music teacher at Rock U. where she teaches voice\, bass\, ukulele\, keys and guitar. If this sounds all too familiar\, then this event is for you! \nIn this two-part workshop hosted by Noah Weisz\, we’ll explore the common reasons why writing projects lose steam in the middle\, and we’ll experiment with a variety of techniques to breathe new life into a sagging story. Come prepared with your work-in-progress and the challenges you’re facing\, and get ready to roll up your sleeves. Unlock your creativity and get to know other teens in the community as you try out improv games and theater exercises with coach Angelica Brewis. All abilities welcome!\n \nDrinks and light refreshments will be provided by the Library. \nAbout Angelica Brewis: Born in Jamaica\, Angelica is a global citizen who has traveled extensively and lived in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, Australia\, England\, and now Paris. While in high school she took an interest in photography where one of her black and white portraits gave her recognition winning first place. During this time she learned how to develop and enlarge her black and white photography in a darkroom. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography in Toronto\, Canada. After a year working as a freelance photographer\, Angelica went back to school to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Education to become an elementary school teacher. She currently teaches at a bilingual school in Paris. Motivated by her desire to continue learning\, Angelica recently returned to university to complete an MEd in Developmental Psychology in Education while working full time. This led her to founding an English after school theater activity\, Paris Improv for Kids\, for students to develop social-emotional learning. This presentation will include how different colleges evaluate applicants (in light of their offerings and missions\, as well as the composition of their applicant pools) and how you can maximize your students’ chances by helping them: Acquire strong academic credentials and demonstrate intellectual curiosity\nSelect and ace the right standardized exams\nShape their non-academic profile\nMake the most of summers and vacations\nCombat a privileged image\nDistinguish themselves in a crowded applicant pool\n\nAlthough the focus of this presentation is strategic in nature\, it will be filled with examples illustrating how to achieve each of the above efficiently and effectively. \n(Note: this is targeted to 9th \, 10th \, and 11th grade students and their parents\, not 12th graders.) Your characters are annoying you\, your plot is putting you to sleep\, and the only place the story’s going is nowhere—fast. You’re tempted to throw in the towel. If this sounds all too familiar\, then this event is for you! \nIn this two-part workshop hosted by Noah Weisz\, we’ll explore the common reasons why writing projects lose steam in the middle\, and we’ll experiment with a variety of techniques to breathe new life into a sagging story. Come prepared with your work-in-progress and the challenges you’re facing\, and get ready to roll up your sleeves. Noah’s own writing for children and young adults has been widely published in literary magazines and has won the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award\, the Katherine Paterson Prize for middle-grade fiction\, the SCBWI Magazine Merit Award\, and the F(r)iction Short Story Contest. He is also a three-time finalist for the Bath Children’s Novel Award. Originally from Washington\, DC and a recent arrival in Paris\, he currently teaches creative writing workshops and courses at several venues including the International School of Paris and Collège Sévigné.
