Where do the minerals inside our phones and electric cars come from—and at what cost? Who bears the burden of the world’s race to decarbonize?  \nIn The Elements of Power\, journalist Nicolas Niarchos delivers a deeply reported account of the global scramble for the metals that fuel the energy transition. Tracing supply chains from Central Africa to Beijing and Washington\, he reveals how the fight over battery minerals is reshaping geopolitics—and exposing the devastating human consequences of our best intentions. \nNicolas Niarchos will be joined in conversation by journalist Pierre Haski. \nAbout the speakers: \nNicolas Niarchos is a journalist whose work focuses on energy\, war\, and migration. The tournament\, held every four years\, is watched by billions\, and is shaped as much by politics and money as by what happens on the pitch. In this conversation\, Simon Kuper and Darren Tulett discuss Kuper’s latest book World Cup Fever\, his acclaimed account of nine World Cups and what they reveal about football’s transformation over the past three decades. From the spectacle and storytelling to the ethics and economics of the modern game\, Kuper reflects on how the World Cup has come to mirror the world around it—and why it continues to captivate us. \nAbout the speakers: \nSimon Kuper (born in Kampala\, Uganda in 1969) is an author and Financial Times columnist. He is a British-French dual citizen\, and lives in Paris. His recent books include The Happy Traitor\, his biography of the double agent George Blake (2021); Barça: The Rise and Fall of the  Club that Invented Modern Football (2021\, winner of Britain’s Sunday Times award for Football Book of the Year); Chums: How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK (2022); Impossible City: Paris in the Twenty-First Century (2024) and World Cup Fever: A Footballing Journey in Nine Tournaments (2025). \nDarren Tulett was born in 1965 near Brighton\, on England’s south coast. After studying in Manchester—where his interests leaned more toward the city’s football teams and thriving music scene than academia—he moved to Paris\, on a whim. Not speaking French\, he began working as an English teacher\, unwittingly launching what would become a long international career. Following a brief return to England where he nabbed his first job as a sports journalist\, Darren moved back to the French capital and wrote for Bloomberg News and the Guardian before transitioning to French television. After a decade with Canal Plus covering English football\, he joined beIN SPORTS in 2012. He has since reported on major global sporting events\, from Wimbledon to the Olympic Games\, via the Tour de France and is currently looking forward to covering his eighth World Cup.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: The discussion will be available both online and in person. SUMMARY:Screening: The President and the Dragon with the Carter Center
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]In partnership with the American Library of Paris\, the Carter Center is excited to announce a special event in Paris showcasing the new documentary film The President and the Dragon. \nThis searing and compelling documentary\, a Touchline production in association with The Brave Road and Buffalo 8\, tells the story of an unlikely crew – comprising public health veterans\, local volunteers and former child soldiers\, plus President Jimmy Carter himself – traversing Sudan and South Sudan in pursuit of an ambitious goal: the total eradication of the vicious Guinea worm disease. \nAbout the Carter Center: \nIn 1982\, President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter founded The Carter Center to “wage peace\, fight disease\, and build hope” in nations around the world. In 1986\, Guinea worm disease afflicted an estimated 3.5 million people a year in 21 countries in Africa and Asia. Today\, thanks to the work of The Carter Center and its partners – including the countries themselves – the incidence of Guinea worm has been reduced by more than 99.99% to 10 human cases in 2025.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register here” color=”primary” css=”” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.com%2Furl%3Fsa%3Dj%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fthecartercenter.formstack.com%252Fforms%252Ftcc520screening%253Fbbeml%253Dtp-Dm_SN_kaVE6HLULDUnPr0g.jZL5t9uq70ESwX6K49PCUwQ.r5EjkjTT7uEirxZF3FRq2fg.lQVa_H8U64kCd7teoRPfuWg%26uct%3D1775054564%26usg%3DkXOAG62pR91v0c8nsAOnJj5OVYw.%26opi%3D73833047%26source%3Dchat”][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: The event includes a reception and opening remarks before the screening. SUMMARY:(Offsite) Festival America: Où va l’Amérique ? With Addie E. Citchens\, Viet Thanh Nguyen\, Chris Pavone\, Peter Van Agtmael\, and Rachel Donadio
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]How do legacies and power dynamics shape individual and collective identities in the United States? What do families pass on when silence replaces memory? From communities in the South to the high-rises of New York\, from the Vietnamese diaspora to post-9/11 America\, authors Addie E. Citchens\, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Chris Pavone\, alongside documentary photographer Peter Van Agtmael\, bring their perspectives together to paint a sensitive portrait of a fractured country\, where the personal constantly sheds light on the political. \nThis event will be moderated by Curator of Cultural Programs at the American Library in Paris\, Rachel Donadio. \nAbout Festival America: \nThe 12th edition of AMERICA will take place in Vincennes from 24–27 September 2026\, welcoming over 60 American authors to celebrate 250 years of the United States through North American literature and culture.\n \nEvery two years since 2002\, the AMERICA festival has brought together writers from North America. Over seven hundred authors from Canada\, Quebec\, the USA\, Mexico\, Cuba and Haiti have come to meet their French readers. For 4 days and 3 evenings\, the Vincennes event offers a rich program of meetings – booksellers’ café\, major interviews\, thematic debates – screenings of adaptations of novels or documentaries\, a children’s festival\, concerts and events combining books and street culture. \nAMERICA’s strength lies in the fact that it brings American voices and texts to Vincennes\, shedding light on the universality of each artist’s work.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1662638079176{border-left-width: 8px !important;padding-left: 8px !important;border-left-color: #9e0143 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;}”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: This event will take place in person at CŒUR DE VILLE\, AUDITORIUM 98 rue de Fontenay 94300 Vincennes. \nAccess to this event requires purchase of a ticket through Festival America.
