Citchens\, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Chris Pavone\, alongside documentary photographer Peter Van Agtmael\, bring their perspectives together to paint a sensitive portrait of a fractured country\, where the personal constantly sheds light on the political. \nThis event will be moderated by Curator of Cultural Programs at the American Library in Paris\, Rachel Donadio. \nAbout Festival America: \nThe 12th edition of AMERICA will take place in Vincennes from 24–27 September 2026\, welcoming over 60 American authors to celebrate 250 years of the United States through North American literature and culture.\n \nEvery two years since 2002\, the AMERICA festival has brought together writers from North America. Together with Madeleine Schwartz\, editor-in-chief of The Dial and co-editor of How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump\, they will explore how journalists around the world are reporting on an era defined by shifting alliances\, drone warfare\, and competing visions of America’s global role. \nAbout the speakers: \nNataliya Gumenyuk is a Ukrainian journalist and author specializing in foreign affairs and conflict reporting. She is the co-founder and CEO of the Public Interest Journalism Lab\, which fosters constructive discussion around complex social issues. After Russia’s full-scale invasion\, the organization co-founded The Reckoning Project to document war crimes. Buckley Jr.\, and Maya Kandel\, a journalist and scholar of American foreign policy\, for a discussion of the state of the MAGA movement\, the battle for Congress\, and the roles of immigration\, the Supreme Court\, geopolitics\, and the economy in this pivotal election. This panel will be moderated by journalist and author Martin Gelin\, President of the Anglo-American Press Association. \nAbout the speakers: \nSam Tanenhaus\, the former editor of the New York Times Book Review\, is the author of the national bestsellers Whittaker Chambers: A Biography (winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize) and The Death of Conservatism. His feature articles and essays have appeared in the Atlantic\, New Yorker\, New York Times Magazine\, New York Review of Books\, Vanity Fair\, and many other publications in the United States and abroad. His new book\, Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America\, was published to wide acclaim in 2025. \nMaya Kandel is an independent researcher specializing in the United States. She works as an analyst\, consultant\, speaker\, and expert commentator\, with particular expertise in strategic foresight and counter-influence. Trained as a historian\, she is also an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Research on the English-Speaking World (CREW) at Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris 3). Since October 2022\, she has written a twice-monthly column on the United States for Mediapart. From 2021 to 2022\, she served as Senior Fellow and Director of the U.S. Program at the Institut Montaigne. More information about her work is available on her blog\, Froggy Bottom. \nMartin Gelin is a Swedish-American journalist and the author of seven books on American politics\, foreign affairs and culture. His latest book\, Why Soft Power Matters in Hard Times\, will be published in English in 2027. He has written for the Guardian\, Foreign Policy\, Washington Post\, and New York Magazine. Rodman\, current Writer-in-Residence at the Library and acclaimed screenwriter\, discusses the reissue of his novel Destiny Express. Originally published in 1990 and now returning in a new edition from Rare Bird Books/Unnamed Press\, the novel follows filmmakers Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou as the Reichstag burns and the Nazi regime rises to power. Drawing on Rodman’s deep engagement with cinema—including his work as a screenwriter and former president of the Writers Guild of America West—Destiny Express explores the collision of art\, ambition\, love\, and political power at a defining moment in film history. \nAbout the speaker: \nHoward A. Rodman is the author of the novels Destiny Express and The Great Eastern. As a screenwriter\, his films include Joe Gould’s Secret; August with Josh Hartnett\, Rip Torn\, and David Bowie; and Savage Grace with Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne. On television\, he’s written for Fallen Angels and staffed on HBO Max’s The Idol. He’s a vice president of the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\, a member of the Screenwriters Hall of Fame\, and was knighted by the Republic of France as an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Wrongfully arrested in Russia in March 2023 on fabricated espionage charges\, Gershkovich spent 500 days in prison before his release in a landmark prisoner exchange. In this urgent conversation\, he reflects on his experience of captivity\, the enduring importance of a free press\, and the contradictions of contemporary Russia. \nAbout the speaker: \nEvan Gershkovich is a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal based in Berlin. Born in New Jersey to Soviet émigrés\, he lived in Russia for more than five years before his 2023 arrest and subsequent sixteen-month imprisonment on false espionage charges. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Economist\, and Foreign Policy\, and he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2025 as part of an investigative team for the Journal.
