In this staged reading\, acclaimed playwright and scholar Brenda Withers shares an excerpt from her new musical-in-progress on the life and legacy of Julia Child.  \nFocusing on her formative postwar years in France—from her training at Le Cordon Bleu to the meals and friendships that shaped Mastering the Art of French Cooking—the piece offers an intimate portrait of a Julia before fame\, discovering her calling. This reading will bring together professional actors and non-actors alike\, in the spirit of Child’s enduring belief that anyone can cook. \nAbout the performers: \nBrenda Withers is a playwright\, theater artist\, and founding member of the Harbor Stage Company on Cape Cod. Her plays (The Ding Dongs\, Off Peak\, Matt & Ben) have been produced Off Broadway and across the United States and have earned her the Clauder Prize\, an Edgerton Award\, and the Modern Works Festival grand prize. She has enjoyed residencies with New Georges\, the Camargo Foundation\, and the Huntington Theatre. Brenda is a lyricist with BMI’s Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop\, a graduate of Dartmouth College\, and a beach person.  \nTercelin Kirtley is a Franco-American actor based in Paris\, having grown up in the United States and Africa. On stage\, he has performed Shakespeare\, Brecht\, Molière\, and Tennessee Williams\, in both French and English. At the Opéra Garnier\, he portrayed Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Benjamin Britten\, and appeared as the Celestial Friend in Carousel at the Théâtre du Châtelet. In Australia\, he played Jesus in Ben-Hur\, directed by Robert Hossein. In Uzès\, he brought The Diaries of Nijinsky to the stage as part of the Dance Festival. On screen\, he portrays an American film director in Roma Elastica by Bertrand Mandico\, soon to be released. Along the way\, Wade brings Stein’s Paris vividly to life—her radical experiments in language\, her legendary salon\, and the artists and writers who gathered in her orbit. We’ll conclude at a private residence for coffee and tea\, where guests will have the opportunity to view a rare treasure from the Library’s archives. \nAbout the speakers: \nFrancesca Wade is the author of Square Haunting: Five Women\, Freedom and London Between the Wars (2020)\, which was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and shortlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize. She has a particular interest in oral and anonymous poetry and has published three anthologies and seven poetry collections\, including Dart\, Memorial\, and Falling Awake. Among her distinctions are the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. His other publications include River of Life\, River of Death: The Ganges and India’s Future (OUP\, 2017)\, and The Trouble with Tigers: The Rise and Fall of South-East Asia (HarperCollins\, 1998\, 1999). \nBaptiste Roger-Lacan is a historian and screenwriter. An ENS alumnus with a PhD in history\, he researches counter-revolutionary cultures and the political right. He is a researcher at the Fondation Napoléon and teaches at Sciences Po and the Institut Catholique de Paris. He is the author of Le Roi\, une autre histoire de la droite (Passés Composés\, 2025) and edited the Nouvelle histoire de l’extrême droite (Seuil\, 2025). \nCatherine Fieschi is a leading European politics expert and global analyst whose main focus is on the rise of populist and authoritarian politics in advanced democracies. She is a longstanding adviser to progressive political leaders and campaigns across the globe. A Senior Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre of the European University in Florence\, Catherine is also a Senior Advisor to the geo-political advisory firm Macro Advisory Partners\, and a member of the OECD’s Expert Group on Strategic Foresight. She is a columnist for L’Express. She is the author of Populocracy (2019) and a forthcoming book is on women and the far right. Tracing supply chains from Central Africa to Beijing and Washington\, he reveals how the fight over battery minerals is reshaping geopolitics—and exposing the devastating human consequences of our best intentions. \nNicolas Niarchos will be joined in conversation by journalist Pierre Haski. \nAbout the speakers: \nNicolas Niarchos is a journalist whose work focuses on energy\, war\, and migration. He is the editor and co-founder of Now Voyager\, a new magazine of international affairs. He has been a contributing writer at the New Yorker since 2014\, where he initially started as a fact-checker. His reporting has also appeared in the Nation\, the New York Times\, and the Guardian. In 2023\, he won an Edward R. Murrow Award for a radio report from Ukraine produced with the New Yorker and WNYC\, and his work on mining in Indonesia was shortlisted for a 2024 Livingston Award. He has testified before Congress on the effects of Congolese battery metal mining. His debut book\, The Elements of Power\, was published in January 2026. The book traces the global supply chain of lithium-ion batteries from DR Congo to Indonesia to Western Sahara\, exposing the human cost of the critical minerals powering our phones\, laptops\, and electric vehicles. \nPierre Haski has worked as a journalist for over five decades\, first at Agence France-Presse and later at the French daily Libération. He was a foreign correspondent posted in Johannesburg\, Jerusalem and Beijing. In 2007 he cofounded the news website Rue89.com. He has a daily Geopolitics column on France Inter\, France’s number one radio. Since 2017\, he’s been President of Reporters sans frontières (RSF)\, a Paris-based international NGO. In 2026\, he launched a YouTube channel on world affairs titled Le monde de Pierre Haski.
