In this staged reading\, acclaimed playwright and scholar Brenda Withers shares an excerpt from her new musical-in-progress on the life and legacy of Julia Child. \nFocusing on her formative postwar years in France—from her training at Le Cordon Bleu to the meals and friendships that shaped Mastering the Art of French Cooking—the piece offers an intimate portrait of a Julia before fame\, discovering her calling. This reading will bring together professional actors and non-actors alike\, in the spirit of Child’s enduring belief that anyone can cook. \nAbout the performers: \nBrenda Withers is a playwright\, theater artist\, and founding member of the Harbor Stage Company on Cape Cod. Her plays (The Ding Dongs\, Off Peak\, Matt & Ben) have been produced Off Broadway and across the United States and have earned her the Clauder Prize\, an Edgerton Award\, and the Modern Works Festival grand prize. She has enjoyed residencies with New Georges\, the Camargo Foundation\, and the Huntington Theatre. Brenda is a lyricist with BMI’s Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop\, a graduate of Dartmouth College\, and a beach person. \nTercelin Kirtley is a Franco-American actor based in Paris\, having grown up in the United States and Africa. On stage\, he has performed Shakespeare\, Brecht\, Molière\, and Tennessee Williams\, in both French and English. At the Opéra Garnier\, he portrayed Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Benjamin Britten\, and appeared as the Celestial Friend in Carousel at the Théâtre du Châtelet. In Australia\, he played Jesus in Ben-Hur\, directed by Robert Hossein. In Uzès\, he brought The Diaries of Nijinsky to the stage as part of the Dance Festival. On screen\, he portrays an American film director in Roma Elastica by Bertrand Mandico\, soon to be released. Alongside his acting work\, he writes and performs his own songs on acoustic guitar\, inspired by folk and Celtic traditions.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: The discussion will be available in person only and will not be recorded. \nAttendance at this event constitutes permission for your photograph or video to be taken at the event and used by the American Library in Paris for marketing\, promotional\, pedagogical\, or other purposes.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1758032823591{border-left-width: 8px !important;padding-left: 8px !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-color: #9e0143 !important;}”] \nEvenings with an Author are free and open to the public (with a 10€ suggested donation)\nthanks to the generous support of GRoW @ Annenberg.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The tournament\, held every four years\, is watched by billions\, and is shaped as much by politics and money as by what happens on the pitch. In this conversation\, Simon Kuper and Darren Tulett discuss Kuper’s latest book World Cup Fever\, his acclaimed account of nine World Cups and what they reveal about football’s transformation over the past three decades. From the spectacle and storytelling to the ethics and economics of the modern game\, Kuper reflects on how the World Cup has come to mirror the world around it—and why it continues to captivate us. \nAbout the speakers: \nSimon Kuper (born in Kampala\, Uganda in 1969) is an author and Financial Times columnist. He is a British-French dual citizen\, and lives in Paris. His recent books include The Happy Traitor\, his biography of the double agent George Blake (2021); Barça: The Rise and Fall of the  Club that Invented Modern Football (2021\, winner of Britain’s Sunday Times award for Football Book of the Year); Chums: How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK (2022); Impossible City: Paris in the Twenty-First Century (2024) and World Cup Fever: A Footballing Journey in Nine Tournaments (2025). \nDarren Tulett was born in 1965 near Brighton\, on England’s south coast. After studying in Manchester—where his interests leaned more toward the city’s football teams and thriving music scene than academia—he moved to Paris\, on a whim. Not speaking French\, he began working as an English teacher\, unwittingly launching what would become a long international career. Following a brief return to England where he nabbed his first job as a sports journalist\, Darren moved back to the French capital and wrote for Bloomberg News and the Guardian before transitioning to French television. After a decade with Canal Plus covering English football\, he joined beIN SPORTS in 2012. He has since reported on major global sporting events\, from Wimbledon to the Olympic Games\, via the Tour de France and is currently looking forward to covering his eighth World Cup.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: The discussion will be available both online and in person. Together\, we will dwell with a single painting — Titian’s Man with a Glove — allowing its details\, textures\, and silences to emerge over time. \nDrawing on the sensibility he brings to A Month in Siena\, his luminous meditation on art and the human condition\, Matar allows us to explore what happens when we give a work of art our full attention. What can sustained looking reveal about presence\, vulnerability\, and the passage of time? \nAbout the speaker: \nHisham Matar was born in New York to Libyan parents\, spent his childhood in Tripoli and Cairo and has lived most of his life in London. He is the recipient of numerous international prizes\, including the Premio Gregor von Rezzori\, the Commonwealth Writers Prize\, the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize\, the Slightly Foxed First Biography Prize\, the Prix du livre étranger\, the Geschwister/Scholl Preis\, the Rathbones Folio Prize\, the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award\, the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography and\, most recently\, the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Important information: The discussion will be available both online and in person.
