Attendance will be noted so that teens who complete a majority of the 10 2019-2020 meetings will receive a certificate of partici(pation. \n(CANCELLED) On 7 March\, the group will focus on “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Romantic poet or rock star? With a life full of drugs\, women and poetry\, heavy metal band Iron Maiden clearly thought so\, and put “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” to music. Today\, we have Coleridge to thank for the metaphor of having an albatross around one’s neck\, or a troublesome burden. Likewise\, Coleridge’s brooding celebrity friend\, Lord Byron was instrumental in pushing him to publish the poem “Kubla Khan”. Join us as we explore both works as well as Coleridge’s role as a founder of the Romantic Movement. \nOn 4 April\, the group will focus on “The Red-Headed League” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The second of 56 Sherlock Holmes stories published by Scottish crime fiction writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, “The Red-Headed League” is a mystery that leaves readers guessing until the end. Join us as we step back in time to central London\, circa 1891\, to follow the famous Victorian Detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson as they confront an entirely peculiar and unique case. We will also explore Doyle’s life and career\, including his interests in spiritualism and freemasonry. \nOn 30 May\, the group will focus on the work of Gwendolyn Brooks. Gwendolyn Brooks is one of the most highly regarded\, influential\, and widely read poets of 20th-century American poetry. She was a much-honored poet\, even in her lifetime\, with the distinction of being the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. Several of her poems reflect the civil rights activism of that period. Join us as we learn about her life and works. \n  \nAbout Laura: Laura is a Canadian specializing in policy writing and marketing & communications. She has worked for the federal governments of Canada and Bermuda as well as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris. She is the mother of two bilingual children attending high school in the French public school system and she is passionate about ensuring that children develop literary skills to enhance their love of reading and writing. \nAdvance registration is required for this event (sign-up HERE to reserve a spot for all three spring dates: 4 April and 30 May). Participation in teen events is free for Library members and 10€ for non-members\, and each teen attending must have a valid Library card or purchase a day pass. SUMMARY:Evenings with an Author: Roger Lipsey
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nPolitics and Conscience: Dag Hammarskjöld on the Art of Ethical Leadership\, published in late February\, gives us the occasion to look at Hammarskjöld’s life and contributions as a whole. Roger’s talk\, richly illustrated with photographs and documents\, will explore Hammarskjöld’s eight-plus years as secretary-general of the United Nations\, his simmering conflict with Charles de Gaulle (the UN? “ce machin!”)\, and the power of his political thought and practice.\n\n\n\n‘At a time when political leadership in many contexts seems to be assimilating itself to the worst and most corrosive bits of the entertainment industry\, and when the whole ideal of public service is disregarded or despised\, it matters that we know where to look for hope and challenge.  Dag Hammarskjöld’s extraordinary example of a statesmanship that was at once astute\, humble\, courageous\, patient and risky is as necessary for us as water in the desert; and in this welcome book\, Hammarskjöld’s finest modern biographer sets out with model clarity and passion just what we might learn from him\, just what we might hold ourselves accountable to.’    \n— Rowan Williams\, Master of Magdalene College (Cambridge)\, Archbishop of Canterbury (ret.) \n\n\n\n\nRoger is the author of Hammarskjöld: A Life (2013)\, the first full biography in 40 years\, well-received in the English-speaking world and Scandinavia. He has published many other books on topics ranging from the spiritual in twentieth-century art to the life of the Trappist monk and author Thomas Merton. Roger has an undergraduate degree from Yale College and a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts (New York University). Visit rogerlipsey.net for a complete overview of his work as a writer.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] Evenings with an Author: Ron Rosbottom
DESCRIPTION:[This event has been cancelled\, thank you for your understanding.] \n  \nThe author of the acclaimed When Paris Went Dark\, longlisted for the National Book Award\, returns to World War II once again to tell the incredible story of the youngest members of the French Resistance—many only teenagers—who waged a hidden war against the Nazi occupiers and their collaborators in Paris and across France. Sudden Courage brilliantly evokes this dark and uncertain period\, from the beginning of the occupation until the last German left French soil. A chronicle of youthful sacrifice and courage in the face of evil\, it is a story that holds relevance for our own time\, when democratic nations are once again under threat from rising nativism and authoritarianism. Beyond that\, it is a riveting investigation about what it means for a young person to come of age under unpredictable and violent circumstances. \n  \nRonald C. Rosbottom is the Winifred L. Arms Professor in the Arts and Humanities and Professor of French\, European Studies\, and Architectural Studies at Amherst College. Previously he was Dean of the Faculty at Amherst. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques\, awarded by the French government. He divides his time between Amherst\, Massachusetts\, and Paris. \n

SUMMARY:[POSTPONED to 3 June] Jean Beaman in conversation with Inès Seddiki about Citizen Outsider: Children of North African Immigrants in France
DESCRIPTION:[This event has been postponed to 3 June 2020. Thank you for your understanding.]\n\nCitizen Outsider: Children of North African Immigrants in France\nWhile portrayals of immigrants and their descendants in France and throughout Europe often center on burning cars and radical Islam\, Citizen Outsider: Children of North African Immigrants in France paints a different picture. Through fieldwork and interviews in Paris and its banlieues\, Jean Beaman examines middle-class and upwardly mobile children of Maghrébin\, or North African immigrants. By showing how these individuals are denied cultural citizenship because of their North African origin\, she puts to rest the notion of a French exceptionalism regarding cultural difference\, race\, and ethnicity and further centers race and ethnicity as crucial for understanding marginalization in French society. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJean Beaman is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She was previously on the faculty at Purdue University and has held visiting fellowships at Duke University and the European University Institute (Florence\, Italy). Her research is ethnographic in nature and focuses on race/ethnicity\, racism\, international migration\, and state-sponsored violence in both France and the United States. She is an Editor of H-Net Black Europe\, an Associate Editor of the journal\, Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power\, and Corresponding Editor for the journal Metropolitics/Metropolitiques. She earned her B.A.\, M.A.\, and Ph.D. from Northwestern University.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn evening of conversation…\n\n\n\n\n\nFor her evening at the Library\, Jean will be in conversation with Inès Seddiki\, a French-Moroccan activist and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professional living in the banlieues of Paris. Inès graduated with a masters degree in corporate social responsibility from Grenoble Graduate School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pierre Mendès-France University. In 2016\, she founded GHETT’UP\, an organization dealing with youth empowerment and leadership in the underprivileged areas of Paris\, the banlieues. 5000+ youth have been impacted by the organization’s programs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Drawing from his own childhood\, Solis says that he wrote these stories “to see how that skinny brown kid riding his bike out there in the desert made sense of his complicated\, deeply beautiful and troubled world.” \nMembers are invited to consult the stories before enjoying the performance; please request them from the Member Services desk. \n  \nPlease reserve your tickets here and bring your printed ticket to the show. \nThe performance will be followed by a reception– all ticket holders are welcome to attend. \n  \nThis event is sponsored by the American Library in Paris and the Fondation Jeannine Manuel. \n

SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] Writing Workshop with Mimi Zollars-Sapparrart
DESCRIPTION:[This workshop has been cancelled; thank you for your understanding.] \nPoetry Workshop Instructions: \nPlease bring TWELVE copies (to pass out) of one or two original poems\, no more than one page each\, or a single\, double-spaced page of prose. Lovely manners are a requisite. A good time is probable. If you would like to use a prompt beforehand you may consider either of the following: After Party\, What is it like after all the guests go home?— OR— 3 a.m. epiphany. \nMimi Zollars-Sapparrart has been writing poetry off and on her since she was a young girl. Over the past decade she has attended the San Miguel Writing Conference and Literary Festival\,  revelations in the Art of Memoir Salon with Mary Karr in Patmos\, Greece and numerous workshops in Seattle\, Austin\, Houston and her ‘home group’ in Port Aransas\, Texas. She believes workshops provide a unique and vital space for others to read our work and offer feedback. As a collective—we allow ourselves to be vulnerable\, fearless and bold both as an attentive reader and as writer-under-review. We will be most concerned with voice\, carnality—the senses\, form and brevity\, motion and emotion\, although plot and character may be relevant. \nMs Zollars-Sapparrart’s first book of poems\, Benediction for a Black Swan\, received much critical acclaim and her book was named one of Kirkus Reviews Best Indie Books of 2015. She runs a chambre d’hôtes in the Basque Country of France with her husband and is currently at work on her second book of poems. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Teens Explore Literature: Coleridge\, Conan Doyle and Brooks (ages 12-18) (By RSVP)
DESCRIPTION:ages 12-18 \n  \nHosted by volunteer Laura Hershey\, this monthly workshop is designed to teach teens the fundamentals of writing and literary analysis in a fun\, interactive setting. Participants will read\, analyze and interpret a selection of notable works of literature\, including short stories\, poetry\, dramatic works\, speeches\, and music lyrics\, among others. Each meeting will include an exploration of the author or work in focus\, a reading and analysis of the work\, as well as identifying the literary period\, literary devices and literary features which make the work or works special.  Meetings will include group discussions\, videos\, quizzes\, and multimedia. \nParticipants are encouraged to attend monthly so as to better contribute to discussion. Send an email to Celeste\, our Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager\, with questions about this event or any of our teen programs: celeste@americanlibraryinparis.org. \n
