Howard is the author of the novels The Great Eastern and Destiny Express, screenplays Joe Gould’s Secret; August; Savage Grace. He is the former President of the Writers Guild of America West and a Professor at the University of Southern California. He is also the artistic director of Sundance Screenwriting Labs and has been awarded Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres.

Workshop description:

Using examples from my novel THE GREAT EASTERN, and my screenplay for SAVAGE GRACE, I want to talk about the joys and concerns of writing historical fictions, and help guide fellow writers through the straits of ideation, research, editing, writing. What are the period details that reveal character, what are the period details that simply overwhelm the reader? How much responsibility do we owe, backward, to real personages and the historical record? How much do we owe, forward, to the audience? Please feel ready to workshop your own ideas/works in progress.
