Film screenings about the American Hospital of Paris
5 September 2018 @ 19 h 30 min
The Library is pleased to present a special double-screening of two documentary films about the history of the American Hospital of Paris: At Home and Over There: American Women Physicians in World War I and The American in Paris: The True Story of the American Hospital of Paris in WWI.
In 2017, the American Medical Women’s Association partnered with Raw Science Foundation to produce a short documentary, At Home and Over There: American Women Physicians in World War I. When the United States entered WWI, there was an immediate need for medical personnel. But when the Army Surgeon General sent out a call for physicians to serve in the Medical Corps, the women physicians who applied were rejected. Undeterred, women physicians found other ways to participate by becoming civilian contract surgeons, serving with the French Army, or volunteering with humanitarian relief organizations to provide medical care. Many women were able to serve through the American Women’s Hospitals (AWH), founded by the Medical Women’s National Association (MWNA), which sponsored one of the two all women medical units that worked abroad in France. The Women’s Overseas Hospitals was sponsored by the National Woman’s Suffrage Association.
The film screenings will be followed by Q&A session with Mollie Mar, the producer of the At Home and Over There.
