Evenings with An Author: Hala Alyan, The Arsonists’ City

The Library’s fall 2018 Visiting Fellow, Hala Alyan, will talk about her book in progress, The Arsonists’ City, about a family that unravels as its members come together to sell their ancestral home in Beirut. During her fellowship, Alyan will be researching components of her novel, which she says include “the Civil War of Lebanon, the history of the French occupation of Lebanon, the Arab Spring, and of all things, Old Hollywood.” She will also talk about the intersection of mental health and creative expression.

About the Author

Hala Alyan is the author of several award-winning poetry books, including Atrium and Hijra, and the novel Salt Houses. As the Library’s fall 2018 Visiting Fellow, she will be working on her novel in progress, The Arsonists’ City, about a family that unravels as its members come together to sell their ancestral home in Beirut. Alyan lives in New York, and is also a licensed psychologist.
