Evenings with An Author: Charles Brasart and Anne-Florence Quaireau, You Talkin’ To Me?

16 October 2018 @ 19 h 30 min

Authors Charles Brasart and Anne-Florence Quaireau will discuss American pronunciation for French speakers in You Talkin’ To Me? Améliorez votre prononciation de l’anglais américain.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that French people and foreign languages go together like oil and water. There’s a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to hearing English spoken with a French accent, as if the French had adopted a sophisticated laissez-faire approach to pronunciation — but for the Gaul trying to mind their h’s and their th’s, to remember the difference between a ship and a sheep, or to not get hopelessly confused by the difference between thoughthroughsawso and zoo, speaking English can actually be a trying experience. That’s why we wrote You Talkin’ To Me? Améliorez votre prononciation de l’anglais américain, a fun, no nonsense guide to a better US accent specifically designed for the French.

In order to help them get rid of their inner Gérard Depardieu, we looked deep under the hood and picked apart the pronunciation of American English, and the conclusion is simple: English is weird. Come and learn things you didn’t know about your own language, and bring a French friend along for tailored advice at the end of the talk!
