Bookworms: Merci Suarez Changes Gears (ages 9-12) (By RSVP)
September 28 @ 11 h 00 min - 12 h 30 min
One event on 28 September 2019 at 11 h 00 min
The book club for 9-12-year-olds!
In September, we’ll be reading the 2019 Newbery Medal Winner Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina.
We’ll begin the book as a group and then we’ll explore and discuss this award-winning novel together during our meetings, and we’ll do a few fun activities inspired by the story.
About the book: Merci Suarez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. Things aren’t going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what’s going on, so she’s left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school.
How Bookworms works: Sign-up HERE to reserve a spot and a book. We’ll meet first on 21 September, and each participant will receive a copy of the book to read on their own over the next week. When we meet up again on 28 September, we will discuss the story in depth and create our own writing and artwork inspired by the story. We’ll do some fun related activities during both meetings as we explore this novel together.
