A message from the Director

I want to share with the extended family of the American Library in Paris the news that I will be stepping down as director of the Library at the end of the summer. I do so knowing that the Library is in excellent shape and secure hands thanks to its staff, its trustees, its donors, its volunteers, its members, and thousands of other who pass through our doors.

Leading this extraordinary institution was a professional adventure I could never have predicted. Looking back on the Library I found in 2007, not much remains the same today. It has been a privilege to shape this place of unique traditions and constituencies during a global revolution in how people access and publish information and ideas.

I will have the chance later this spring to reflect on the achievements and lessons of the last decade, including at the Gala Dinner on 23 May, with guest of honor Stacy Schiff. I hope many of you will attend. The Library's leadership is now focused on identifying the next director. The board of trustees has appointed a search committee led by the board chairman, Luis Roth. A job description is now on the website with information for candidates and those who might wish to suggest candidates.

My plans are to remain in Paris and turn to writing projects. The board has asked me to oversee the annual American Library in Paris Book Award as a consultant for a while longer, a continuing connection that will allow me to champion my favorite nonprofit.

In the meantime, thank you for your support of the Library, and thank you in advance for your support of all those who will carry it into its next chapter.
